The hotel is quite old. It is charming, but you can see and smell the ageing quite well. Our room was big and nice, but the terrace was a disaster. It had not been cleaned for ages and the furniture was old with dirty or no cushions at all. The water in our pool did not look clean.
Except for the dining room service, service and attitude here is not as elsewhere in South Africa. Even to get us to Plettenberg Bay and back seemed to be difficult for the staff. We finally had to rent a car, which made it easy for us to leave the place earlier than planned. The mountain bikes were in a terrible condition. We were unable to find two useable ones.
But the evenings in the main building were great: Cosy atmosphere with many fireplaces, excellent service, very good food, and a nice wine list.
They were also keen to show us around on the big property, which is beautiful and excellent for walks.

we stayed 4 nights in the middle of our trip to sa. having such a great time in franschoek, i was afraid the place let us down even after reading the great reviews before. i was very wrong. my wife and i had an unforgettable experience in kurland, which is hard to put in words. You stay in a big cape dutch villa which feels like Your house, the food is excellent (who thought healthy food can taste that good) and all sourced from close organic providers, management is superp (ask dunkin anything, he is amazing), lot of things to do (one of my favorite was complimentary quad biking through the estate), kurland is next to a fabulous beach (nature valley), but please do not forget to use suncream expensively, i learned the hard way. they pack You a wonderful lunch basket and give You all things needed for the beach. they have a wonderful library, gym, sauna and spa, beautiful outside spaces and a romantic veranda to have this sun setting cocktails you dreamed about coming to sa.

My title should say it all - it's very hard to fault this place. The hotel itself is beautiful - there is a main building with dining room, library and various sitting rooms. The guests stay in Dutch colonial style "chalets". We had a room with an upstairs loft for the children (complete with their own bathroom!). The main bedroom has a four poster bed and living area complete with a fire which someone would come and light every night. The bathroom is huge, complete with underfloor heating, a large bath, separate shower and immense cupboards.
The hotel is itself a polo ranch, so there is opportunity to go riding every day if you so want. The grounds are huge and you can explore on foot, on bike or on quadbike. There is also a separate playroom, two swimming pools, tennis courts and sandpit. (There is also a spa but we didn't have time to use it).
The food is excellent and it you want, the children can eat in the kitchen where the chef will literally make them anything they fancy. We did this three of the four nights and then hired a nanny to look after the children while we had our fantastic dinner in peace. (Hiring a nanny was very reasonable - 50 rand an hour which is under 5 euros).
If you ever get to leave the grounds (!), you are literally five minutes away from four animal centres - the Elephant Sanctuary (a chance to walk or ride the ellies), Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and Tenikwa cheetah centre. We also went whale watching in Plettenberg which is a twenty minute drive from the hotel.

We spent 2 blissful nights at Kurland on our recent trip through the Garden Route. The hotel is just beautiful - huge scenic grounds, gorgeous main house and incredible rooms. We had the best rooms in the place and I could not fault them. They were spacious, tastefully decorated, tranquil with a huge terrace and private pool looking over to the mountains. We have 2 small girls who were thrilled with their own "loft" room above ours that was huge and with its own full bathroom.

The service was faultless - we were promptly greeted by name as we stepped out of our car, whenever we returned to the property they offered us tea or coffee in our room, there was someone to start our fireplace for us, there were toys and colouring books left in the childrens' loft and the kids were taken on a complimentary pony ride.

We were there in the "off" season but thoroughly enjoyed the clean crisp air, blazing fireplaces and peace and quiet.

We would be thrilled to be able to return again one day.

We've just returned from a three week trip to South Africa that included a two night stay at the Kurland. The other reviews are right - this place really is fantastic! Relaxing, superb service, excellent food (although we chose to eat out on the terrace rather than in the formal dining room) and lovely rooms. It was the highlight of our trip, and for us had that something extra that put it above the Tsala Treetops/Gorah Elephant camp (where we also stayed).

OK, we have travelled all over the world but we keep going back to Kurland because it is jsut the most relaxing, beautiful hotel in the world with outstanding service.

It is also very close to Plett and other gorgeous spots on the Garden Route. It's great for romantic couples, and equally great for families. It's realtively small and intamate, but there is so much to do there you could stay for weeks, and some people do!
