5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 July 2012

we stayed as part of a trip around the Western Cape in July . The picture above does not do it justice as it looks attractive from the outside . But the real treat is inside which is attractively eclectic and even better are the stunnning views from the patio and some of the bedrooms . Our 2 rooms were lovely and really well decorated , with a patio at the front and a private garden at the rear ! Breakfast was lovely and could be eaten outside on the patio even in the middle of winter under heaters . Service was attentive and charming .Wonderful place would love to go back . Enjoyed by all 10 of our group .

Room Tip: the first floor rooms may have better sea views but the ground floor rooms may have access to the sm...

We stayed here earlier this year and LOVED it! We only had breakfast - no other meals so cannot vouch for those - but the service was wonderful, the place was wonderful, so comfortable, so off the wall, SUCH views! Treat yourself to a bit of campness, it's so worth it.

At first blush, you’ll wonder if this is more hotel or restaurant. Décor is eclectic at best. But stick with it. You’ll end up loving this place. They describe themselves as “sexy boho beach chic” whatever that is. But there is no doubt that you’ll wonder who decorated the place until you realize that each piece has been carefully selected and placed – from the eland heads to the old hat on the table. Even the music is picked by the owner to establish the ambience for the time of day. It is very stylish.

Our room, on the main floor off the pool, was surrounded by lush tropical plants. It is large with twin beds about 3 feet off the ground. Stools are provided to get into bed. The tub is in the room and there is a real “water closet.” But where is the shower? It’s outside off the huge private patio. The patio has one chaise (odd for a room for two) but a large table with a collection of tsotchkes, again carefully chosen. They’d seem out of place anywhere but here. At night, since it was cool we were provided with hot water bottles encased in wrap which said “Keep Calm and Carry On….Snoozing.” Instead of robes, you are provided with big white caftans.

There is a flat screen TV, DVD player and wi-fi in the public areas.

In the Web photos, some rooms show good bedside lighting – but not in our room. It was really dark when the sun went down. Sometimes the attempt to be chic went awry. The mirror is off to one side, so my partner had to keep leaning to the right while shaving. It was awkward.

The dining room is very large with indoor, partial indoor and al fresco dining with a sweeping view of Plettenberg Bay. The weather was sunny and warm during our visit so we ate breakfast outside. (which is quite bountiful – have the cinnamon and apple pancakes) Breakfast is served until noon. We ate dinner there twice and they were quite tasty and creative. You can have light fare (pizzas) or a more traditional dinner. There are heaters and a fireplace to ward off the cool evenings.

The property is at one end of Plett which is a large town with the usual stores and restaurants. If you want up market stores, go to Old Nick Village – about 10 minutes away on the main highway. Also, for a fun meal, head to the Lookout Deck, below the hotel about 5 min. You can watch surfers and sunset (and dolphins if in season.)

According to their Web site, no children under 16 are allowed, which was perfect for us to have a quiet holiday.

The service is efficient but very friendly. One of the managers even telephoned our next destination. We were worried about arriving late in the dark. She provided detailed instructions and arranged for them to call us to see how we were doing. How good is that?

I took family & friends for lunch to the grand yesterday. I have been visiting Plett for many years & have always heard what a great place the grand is. Overall the food was terrible. I had Chicken Peri Peri & Two packaged breasts arrived on a plate with chips @ a jug of peri peri sauce. Totally not what I would have expected. My friend had steak which was tough. One person had the plain burger which was reasonable. Won't go back for food. The setting is fantastic though!!!!!

I stayed at the Grand for one night in February. The service was excellent from start to finish. The staff were friendly and attentive and went out of their way to help. They even suggested a late check out so we could shower and change after swimming at the beach. Breakfast and dinner were lovely, served on the beautiful terrace. I would highly recommend staying here.

I can't comment on accomodation, but the brunch we had at the Grand was wonderful. Best scrambled eggs I've had in a long while and excellent coffee. The setting, at the end of the main street, is lovely, with views over the lagoon and sea. Decor is delightfully quirky and shabby chic, stepping through the doors is like stepping back in time. Service is warm, friendly and helpful. If we'd had more time, we'd have returned for lunch or supper, and it looks like a wonderful place to stay. We will be going back!

We recently spent two nights at The Grand and just loved it! We had originally booked only one night but loved it so much we stayed two and could have stayed longer! Room 6 is heaven, we felt like we had stepped back in time to the fifties or sixties, intimate and unique! Sue and the team were so friendly, helpful and inviting...helping us with hotel bookings, restaurant bookings, maps and advice on the area. Thanks guys you are all wonderful! Oh and we also loved little Tabitha the cat! She definately got it right when she walked off the street into The Grand!

Room Tip: We only had access to room 6 and it was truly special, especially if you love a bath like me!
