“Faultless safari experience”
Reviewed 2 January 2014

I had high expectations for my 1st African safari and the Eagles Grag lodge at Shamwari surpassed them all.

We landed in Port Elisabeth after a 12 hour flight and drove straight to the reserve to find them waiting for us with a nice warm drink and a car ready to take us out on our 1st drive of the stay. The guides and the staff in general are always excited about making your stay the best possible stay.

As for the main reason that you're there...the safari drives...unbelievable. The rangers manage the drives between them selves really well so you rarely see another car and feel as though you have the park to yourself. Even in a fantastic sighting they will ensure that there are only a couple of cars there at a time which really adds to the experience.

As for sightings, we saw it all. Three prides of Lions, including following them on a hunt, Cheetahs, Leopards, Hippo, Baboons, Elephants with babys, Wart Hogs, Black and White Rihno with babys and a Giraffe in labour.

Food was 1st class, service was 5 star and the room was breathtaking. A perfect start to our honeymoon.

This was my first time on safari and Shamwari and the accommodation at Eagles Crag lived up to our high expectations. We spent 3 nights there and went on 6 game drives. The game drives had a maximum of 6 plus guide in the vehicle with a maximum of 3 vehicles allowed near any particular animals at any time so the whole feeling was of space and exclusivity. The guide we had (Frans) was very knowledgeable, clearly loves what he does and had a real knack of being able to spot the animals. The hot chocolate and hot towels awaiting us on our return on the cold drives was really welcome.

The food and accommodation at Eagles Crag was first class. There was plenty of storage in the room, there was both an inside and outside shower which were both very powerful as well as a great bath. The rooms were cleaned whilst we were out on the game drives and so there were no interruptions when we were in our room which was great.

All in all thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended.

We arrived at the reserve after visiting Cape Town for 3 days sight seeing and we could not wait to get out there! We arrived at lunch time so we checked in which took seconds as we were expected, we were shown to our room and asked if we wanted to go out with our ranger on the afternoon we should dress for safari and head up for a spot of lunch. 3 course meal was offered which did was very nice indeed, we ate and hit the road with Frans our ranger for the stay. We were in the jeep for less than an hour and we came across 5 lions looking skinny and in need of a good Sunday roast Frans told us that we should follow as they were looking for a feed! Within the hour we had witnessed a kill poor little wart hog, 5 lions just over a couple of metres away which was amazing but not if that makes sense. We found ourselves 200 metres down the road on a toilet break, nuts, crisps, red wine, vodka and whisky is a cool box Superb! In the whole stay of 3 days and nights we saw Lions on a kill, Cheetahs on a kill, Jackal on a kill, and even a small cat like jackal eating a rat, Hippo's, Monkeys, Impala, Giraffe, Elephants, Wart hogs, White Rhino, Monkeys and many birds, foot prints and other amazing animals that you only see on Animal Planet!

The day started early as you had to been in your jeep by 7.30am for 1st stint we were back for noon and down for lunch at 1pm ish for 3 course lunch, then back in the jeep for 2.30 - 3pm for the 2nd safari which can last until as late as 7pm if you manage to bump into something that you have not seen on the way back to the lodge! Arriving back to the lodge the staff are there to welcome with a warm wipe and a nice hot chocolate which was well in need as the temp this time of year was cold you will need jeans, sock's, 3 layers + coat and gloves and scarves its fresh! Back at the lodge you had time for a shower and a quick drink and it was time for dinner another 3 courses and a nice glug of wine which was reasonably priced and an early night as the alarm is set for 6.30am! Thanks to all the staff at Eagles crag and Frans the sharmazin ranger who made the whole experience even more memorable!

Room Tip: All nice John Travolta, Brad Pitt + Angelina stayed in Lodge 2.....!
