Cycads on Sea Guesthouse
Reviewed 24 February 2012

We spent a wonderful 4 days at the Cycads on Sea earlier this month mainly thanks to the friendly hosts, Gerhard & Miemie. The Cycads is ideally located overlooking the sandy East Cape beaches of St Francis Bay. All units have direct access which makes it easy to come and go. Breakfasts are excellant and Gerhard proves detailed directions of where to find good dinner menus.

We really enjoyed our 2 nights at Cycads, Gerhard and Miemie were so friendly and helpful. We had a lovely room with a view of the sea. The breakfasts were beautifully presented and delicious in the sweet breakfast room.
We went to Cape St Francis which was lovely and A restaurant which Gerhard recommended had a lovely meal overlooking the harbour, our waitress Sally was really nice.

Great guesthouse with excellent hosts.
However the entire area was a bit of a disappointment as you cannot get to the beach area easily. Poor town planning has made this an exclusive venue for the few fortunate owners with sea facing properties. As a visitor you will battle to get close to the sea or even get a glimpse at it.

Cycads on Sea Guest House nestles on a gentle hill overlooking the coast at St Francis Bay. The property is presided over by the charming Gerhard and Miemie who are great hosts who are very enthusiastic about their Guest House and extremely passionate about the surrounding area of St Francis Bay. They run their Guest House with great efficiency, their rooms are spotless and they obviously put a great deal of effort into ensuring their guests are happy and content.

But this is where I get to the “however”. So here goes. However, I feel the Guest House is now a trifle dated and perhaps, rather like an ageing movie star, in need of a bit of a make over. Our ensuite room which, make no mistake, had a great sea view and had a balcony, was nevertheless rather cramped. To reach the bedroom we also had a good few stairs to negotiate and we really struggled with our luggage. It was also a warm steamy summer day and being one floor up – the heat just rose from downstairs – and with no effective air con we were really uncomfortable overnight in what was a small hot room costing 1190 Rand for 2 per night. Another slight problem, call me old fashioned, but a door between the bedroom and the bathroom would have been a nice touch.

That said, the location is great. From our balcony, the view to the left was over the thatched rooftops of this quaint seaside town while to the right you could see across the more conventional rooftops of the properties going toward Port St Francis. The ubiquitous thatched roofs of all the surrounding properties, mandatory in the St Francis Bay area, were somewhat of a curiosity – but for me, while finding them quaint, I nevertheless felt rather uneasy about the strict regimentation of it all. However, back to Cycads.

Without doubt, Gerhard is an enthusiastic host and I really liked him. I’m sure he has his regulars whom he’ll welcome back time after time and they’ll no doubt be more than happy. But to me, Cycads is what I’d call “old school” bed and breakfast. It’s perfectly ok but I think the times have changed – and the times for the more discerning traveller have probably moved on.

We stayed 2 nights in this guesthouse during our 3 weeks vacation and it was definetely one of the nicest places. The breakfast was very good, very friendly hosts and a lovely, very modern room with view to the sea . No need for renovation. The hosts explained in a friendly and detailed way what to do in the area and pointed out the best places where to go for dinner.
Strong recommendation !

Needs definitely mordernising. Never saw the hosts and we were not sure who was managing the guesthouse in those days the hosts were away. Rooms and bathrooms were small and especially the bathroom was not that clean (old). There is not much to do in Francis Bay and the restaurants in the harbour are not worth to write about. Poor food and even on a saturday night we were the only guests in the restaurant (december!).

Gerhardt and Miemie are the most wonderful hosts - experienced, knowledgeable, kind and great fun. Staying in their guest house is a joy. Knowing St F Bay as well as they do, they provide helpful and accurate advice on all matters - restaurants, golf, beaches, fishing and walks. If staying, ask for one of the rooms at the front of the house, preferably upstairs. And enjoy ....
