Village Green Guest House

I was booked at the guest house for five nights but left after one. It rates itself as a four star establishment, but I feel that it barely qualifies for three stars. I stayed in the Bougainvillea suite - one of their expensive rooms. The room is very spacious with lots of windows/doors so quite light during the day. The bed was comfortable. They provided a bathrobe and slippers as well as tea making facilities. The staff are friendly.

However, at night the room is very dark - partly due to the furnishings but also the lighting and light bulbs that do not work. It all feels somewhat like decaying elegance - not well maintained and not quite clean and consequently quite oppressive and unpleasant.

The bathroom is small, dark and dingy. They advertise a shower, but in fact this is not a separate shower but one over the bath which means a slippery entrance and exit from the shower and also a shower rose that is too low for anyone remotely tall - you have to bend over to fit under the spray. Again one of the lights was out in the bathroom making it very dark, and all slightly mouldy and tatty. The kitchen is very close to this particular room and after I had checked in the staff were conversing loudly right next door until about 10h00 pm. The wooden floors in the house further add to noise. They advertise "a safe" which turns out to be a general safe for everyone and not an individual one in the room making it difficult to access at any time you wish to.

In the morning there was no hairdryer in the room - the staff said "someone must have taken it" when I went out to find them (in my bathrobe) and produced a small one from somewhere.

Although the staff were pleasant, the final straw for me was when the person cooking my breakfast was coughing over my food.

I cut my stay short at great cost to myself due to the cancellation policy and unfortunately - although the manager had offered to try and resell the room - this did not materialise.

Sadly although the location is convenient - I will not be staying there again.

As for the last visit in January 2013, nothing to complain : the staff is always available, even in the evening, good breakfeast, quiet place and excellent wifi connection. And last but not least, the smile of Damaris ( sorry for the spelling) every morning.

I traveled alone and was relieved to have such a lovely safe place to enjoy. The courtyard is beautiful for a morning cup of coffee and some peaceful inspiration. The ladies on staff are most warm and friendly. They serve a delicious and generous breakfast ! Laundry service is also available. There is a driver who picked me up from the airport and on sightseeing tours. He had reasonable rates and was cheaper than joining a local tour.He is their main driver and I would recommend him for all your driving needs! This was the private residence of the owner Gail and her family for many years. The home is full of character but with all the conveniences one would need. The neighborhood is safe with a lake and very nice African restaurant within walking distance. I felt refreshed and pampered there, and hope to return! Would highly recommend this to everyone!

Room Tip: All the rooms are beautiful!!

Located in a "village" context convenient for districts of Rosebank, Parktown and Sandton. Right near local shops and restaurants and the Zoo Lake park, Zoo and War Museum.

It has a homely feel and the room was large and comfortable.

The Village Green Guest House is very comfortable, with beautiful landscaping. You can relax in the gardens and barely know you're in the city. The staff was delightful, fixing us amazing breakfasts each morning. Jacques, the manager, was very helpful in helping us arrange sightseeing and entertainment. We felt safe in the neighborhood, and took many walks across the street to go to the grocery stores and restaurants. The Zoo Lake Park is nice to walk around during the day, and the Moyo African restaurant was excellent. The weather was cool at night during our visit, and the heated mattress pads at the Village Green were wonderful. I can't say enough about the friendliness of the staff ladies and how they took good care of us.

My husband and I arrived at the Village Green Guest House when we first arrived in SA. We stayed for a week before moving into our new flat in SA (we have moved out here with work for a few months). The guest house is amazing - we stayed in the Rose Room which is a really big room, with a huge desk, seating area and it is in pristine condition. The staff are really friendly and helpful. I cannot recommend it more highly!
