“Lovely situation, spacious room, pity about the noisy peacocks!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 October 2012

I travel extensively to Johannesburg on business and being so tired of the usual Sandton hotels was keen to try this guest house recommended by work colleagues. I was impressed with ability to check in early on day of arrival for 3 night stay. There was however little evidence of actual staff at reception when I checked in; reception is in fact the messy guest house office; Dominique does his best to just about singlehandedly manage the place; check in, dinner, laundry, breakfast. My room, Jessie's Room, was massive comprising a TV snug, small dining area and kitchen and a massive bedroom with doors onto an enclosed paved area and en suite bathroom. The grounds are mostly laid out to garden with many (overgrown and poorly lit at night) paths to get to main house from the outlying bedrooms. I got the impression that perhaps the theatre and conference facilities take precedence at Foxwood but that was before I got to see and hear the wildlife! The ducks 'own' the swimming pool which together with lack of privacy of the pool situation did not make it very inviting at all! Finally, if you want a decent night's sleep do not stay here; the peacocks start their shrieking at 5am in the morning. Breakfast was good and we also enjoyed dinner one night in the 'intimate' dining room which is part of the historic house on the property.

Room Tip: A colleague of mine had much less attractive room right at the back of the property. It was very no...

Dear Grant All comments are greatly appreciated. Dominique is delighted - though his colleagues feel their roles have possibly not been recognized - Loveness and Clinton, our two chefs, Dominique's colleague Sam, the cleaning staff Thandi, Cynthia and Mavis etc etc! Dominique is surprised that you haven't told him about the peacocks during your stay - which is a pity as we could easily have moved you to a suite not as close to the tree which the peacocks frequent during the mating season.
They are as you know birds that cannot be dictated to, and certainly do not consider themselves Foxwood property. They belong to the neighbourhood (if "belong" they can!) With 2 and a half acres of gardens, and many ancient trees they are attracted to our property at night. Even if we could keep them away, there would be an outcry from many of our regular clients, who love the ducks, the peacocks, the guinea-fowl - and the swans we have recently added to our menagerie!

At night, Tony Ndlovu lighst the pathways with torches and candles, and the patio under the oaks with fairy lights - possibly not as effective as other lighting options - but the gardens will lose so much of their romantic appeal in the glare of harsh lighting. The intention is to delight our guests - not to make them feel neglected! We do regret it if you were feeling sidelined by the choice of lighting.

Kind regards. Pieter de Vos (Owner)

How nice that one can stay in a place that feels like home. From the moment you enter Foxwood you feel as if you have arrived home. The staff is friendly and very accommodating and the rooms are stunning and large so are the bathrooms. It's an historical home, and everything is done so tastefully. The service was excellent and if you seek a quite spot where you can work or just relax Foxwood House come highly recommended. I think back of my time spent there fondly, and cannot wait to return.

Room Tip: Cottage by the pool of the main house.

I was sceptical to staying at a guesthouse at first, but my scepticism was put to shame. As someone who spends more than 150 nights in hotels each year, I must say I absolutely loved my 5 day stay at the Foxwood House.

Dominique - the duties manager - was an excellent host and ensure that I felt very much at home at the Foxwood House.

The suite was very clean and was kept clean throughout my stay. Food was superb - especially the breakfast, which was served in a highly personal way.

I even used the laundry service of teh Foxwood House and had no complaints whatsoever.

Wifi worked flawlessly most of the time. But whatever issues arose, I could count on Dominique and his staff to tend to things immediately.

I can highly recommend staying at the Foxwood House without reservation. Kids will love staying there too, I am sure.

Room Tip: Get the suite by the duck pool - guaranteed to give you 7-10 interesting ducks to talk to in the mor...

I have stayed at Foxwood many times and it is really a lovely place. The service is excellent, the staff very friendly and prompt. Quite a few times I have been running workshops and everything has gone very smoothly The food is great, especially the breakfast, which can be taken outside in the wonderful garden.

Thank you for your review. We do realize it takes time out of a busy schedule to comment - be it on this website or an e-mail directly to us - and it is greatly appreciated. There can be nothing more beautiful than an early morning breakfast in our gardens outside - weather permitting (as summer rains are a constant part of our lives from November to February)! Regards. Pieter de Vos

1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 September 2010

My organisation co hosted an event with a UK organisation last week. The person organising our event and taking care of all the bookings was absolutely incompetent and useless.

An enquiry was made in April 2010 for conferencing requirements for September. The booking for a 3-day conference and 12 rooms was confirmed on 9 July 2010 and credit card details were emailed. Pauline, the organiser, requested our credit card details as a hold to secure the booking and insisted that we did not need to pay a deposit. The terms and conditions on one of the emails that Pauline sent to us, confirms this. My colleague from the UK emailed the credit card details on 09/07/10. I re-sent the credit card details on 4 August 2010 and Pauline responded to this email. On Tuesday, 7 September, the day before the conference, my colleagues called to tell me that there were problems with the accommodation. When confronted, Pauline made various excuses, all of which were not true and some of which were contradictory. She had clearly messed up our booking and instead of taking responsibility for the mess, she tried to pass the buck and make more excuses.

We asked about accessing Wi-Fi in rooms at Foxwood and she gave us some excuse about renovations having affected internet access – this was not ideal as Wi-Fi access was essential to our operations here and one of the reasons we chose Foxwood was because there was free Wi-Fi access in all conference rooms and bedrooms.

On Wednesday, 8 September, we were allocated a very small conference room, one which was very cramped and not suitable for ± 25 people.

Pauline insisted that Foxwood would take care of all arrangement of a transport to shuttle guests to and from other guesthouses. On Thursday, 09 September 2010, the allocated Foxwood shuttle left after our meeting was supposed to have started, to pick up guests from another guesthouse, despite the fact that Kelly requested that all guests be picked up by 8:30. As a result, our meeting was delayed and the entire agenda subsequent to that was affected. Pauline again just made more excuses and at no stage apologised for the error.

The Wi-Fi was not working in the conference room, which again affected our operations and some of us had to leave the meeting continuously to access emails.

When we complained to the manager, he was very unapologetic and did not believe our claims about the bad organisation, despite the fact that we have emails to back up all our claims. He also said that the guesthouse had gone out of its way to provided services such as security, but these are standard services at the place. Furthermore, the parking was full early in the morning each day, so many guests using their own cars had to park on the street.

Overall, our experience at Foxwood has been appalling and inexcusable and we will not be utilising those facilities again. While the accommodation is of a high standard and the staff are generally very friendly and helpful, I would not recommend Foxwood to my worst enemy.
