“Hip hotel in groovy location”
Reviewed 18 January 2014

Staying n the arts district in the 12 Decades Art Hotel was a highlight of our African vacation. My husband and I stayed in one room and our teenage daughters stayed in an a room across the hall. Reasonably priced and decorated by various South African artists, some rooms are more over-the-top than others but all are spacious with mini kitchens. While not a traditional hotel (very minimal lobby, no restaurant or cafe), the 12 Decades offers a prime location to experience a side of Johannesburg we loved seeing - cafes, boutiques, artist lofts. We booked a walking tour of the Maboneng Precinct with Bheki Dube of Mainstreetwalks so we got a wonderful look at all of the street art and we had a delicious and inexpensive Ethiopian dinner at the Little Addis cafe. I would definitely stay here again, although for some reason we all got lots of mosquito bites so bring repellent just in case.

Room Tip: You can view the rooms online and request specific artists/rooms.

Lovely apartment-like, home-like, warm and serene. Friendly attendants especially the receptionist.
Easy access to all the facilities from parking to the lifts. The experience was totally awesome.++++++++

This hotel has beautiful arty rooms and will be appreciated by people who enjoy art. The concept of this hotel is original and impressive but the service distasteful. Rooms are not cleaned properly, some rooms have a foul smell. The building also accommodates tenants. There is no communal areas to relax with other guests. If you plan to stay up late you will be ordered by the security to go to bed. Client centricity is nonexistent.

Don't listen to the detractors. If you want to stay in a slick hotel located in a neighborhood with character and everything you need, then 12 Decades is your place. It's clean, pleasantly appointed, well-priced, and Nosi is awesome. Boss, the Maboneng van driver, is a cool dude and will hook you up with what's good in Joburg, which can be overwhelming otherwise.

I found the rooms very Cold and the heating was not enough for a room with high sealing. At least carpet the floor or put some vynl or wood it felt like one rented a freezer to sleep in.

Improve your toilets that serve the restaurants imagine using the toilent and you are going to have a meal and you cannot wash your hands because no Taps work. Worst of all seating and Continuously be worried if some one will pish the door because there are no locks on the doors.

Having browsed through the complaints on this website I deduce that the management or owners of this establishment do not respect their clientele.

Your website paints a picture of a very different place, the Maboneng I expected and saw on your web page is no where near what I experienced. Practice what you preach.

I would like to verify a few things about your stay as all of our hotel rooms were carpeted in May this year and also had A/c Heaters installed at the same time. You are welcome to contact me directly in this regard.

The 12 Decades is marketed as an urban modern art hotel in the Maboneng Precinct of City life in Johannesburg it is deplorable and over rated.

I was not expecting much from the service because in these parts of the world don't expect much from customer service and care but I expected some clean linen and a comfortable bed.

The Major Restaurant Pata Pata had the worst food even the odd ribs tasted like they had been frozen for over a decade before they were slapped with a sticky BBQ sauce.

To make maters worse the toilets that serve most of the Restaurants down stairs had no locks and toilet tissue the floors were all wet.

Having said that Blackanese a Sushi restaurant in the sides of the Main Exchange building make some of the best Sushi in Town but too have no toilet facilities.

Stayed here for one night, it's a great hotel. The Maboneng district is a neat neighbourhood in central Joburg currently undergoing revitalization and this hotel is part of the process. It is 'hip', if you will with nice rooms and almost a loft/apartment style feel. Reasonably priced as well with included secure parking.
