This boutique hotel is just one of the best of all my trips !!!. Everything about it is just excellent.
The price is very good for what you get.
The location beautiful, in one of the most elegant and safe places in Johannesburg.
The hotel and its decoration is so beautiful !! every detail is just perfect.
It has a swimming pool and a tennis court and a small gym. The garden is breath taking.
The food outstanding !!!! breakfast , lunch and dinner just like a 5 star hotel. The wine list is superb .
The people are so friendly !!! and the best service ever.
They take care of every little detail !!!
I hope that people can stay here whenever they travel to South Africa, is just an amazing experience

Room Tip: Any room is beautiful. Try to get the upper suites as it has two showers , and one is outside the...

Imagine getting off a 14 hour flight from Atlanta with your a driver waiting to pick you up and drive you in comfort to your reserved hotel. You arrive at the hotel to find the entire staff out front to welcome you and introduce themselves. Walk the few steps to the entry where you offered a complimentary glass of sherry or ice tea. With drink in hand you are shown directly to your room, skipping the hassle of reception lines or paperwork. This was our real life experience.

The suite is luxurious and roomy with quality mattress, pillows and bedding. There is a skylighted eating area opening to a balcony set in an interior garden. Their are complimentary soft drinks in the fridge and a decanter of sherry for after dinner. The common areas are luxurious and inviting, although your room is so comfortable you don't need to stray out.

The staff could not be more helpful, greeting us by name and anticipating our needs before we could express them. And all this for the price of a mid level Manhattan hotel with a closet sized room.

And to top it off, you go to the in house restaurant for a gourmet meal that rival the best you ever had. We really recommend the wild game carpaccio and the ostrich filet, as well as the butternut squash soup.

When we first step into The Residence, we were really WOW by this hotel. We booked in the Mediba Suite which is the nicest room I've ever had after staying in so many hotels around the world. We have a wine cellar in our room! The outdoor area with a great size Jacuzzi and a large bed to laze around to read. Huge area to have a nice breakfast and lunch that you don't want to head down to their resto. Or simply just stay in your room. :)

However I will not head back here again as there're too many mozzies flying around in our room and deck! We couldn't sleep on our last night as we were bitten alive and mozzies circling around our face! They only have the mosquito repellent but they don't have spray to kill the bugs. We just finished a 12-day game drive in Botswana, Bushman Kloof and Londolozi, we didn't even encounter so many mosquitoes!
Gym is old and tired. Only 1 running machine, 1 bike and 1 "shaking" machine. Internet in our room is unstable and slow. Breakfast is ala carte, nice presentation but should have wider selection of fruits (only have papaya, Kiwi and Pineapple).

Otherwise all the staff are nice and very pleasant. Service is great!

Room Tip: Bring your mosquito spray that kills all bugs.

Thank you so much for your feedback. We really do appreciate it. Unfortunately with all the unusual rain we been having I’m sure it’s added to the number of mosquitoes. I am pleased to inform you that we have fumigated and added alternative repellents throughout the hotel. It seems that it was isolated to the Madiba suite but we have taken corrective actions. I am also pleased to inform you that we have ordered new equipment for our fitness room. This is to arrive at the end of April 2014. We are however limited with the size of the room hence the limit on the number of machines. Should you require a full gym we would be more than happy to arrange access to the Virgin Active gym a few blocks down the road.
From all of us here at The Residence we would like to thank you once again and wish you all the very best.

My husband and I spent a night at The Residence when we arrived in Africa. We absolutely loved it. Despite the great reviews online our expectations were exceeded. We were picked up by Lucky as well and it was the perfect start to our visit. The place is stunning. Beautiful decor, great attention to detail. I would describe it as classic-timeless but full of life and romantic. The staff are all very happy, professional, and eager to please. The neighbourhood of Houghton is beautiful. The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated. There was nice music playing on the cd player in our room when we arrived which is such a lovely touch. Our room (can't remember the #) had a beautiful deck with an outdoor shower and bathtub which was a great way to start and end the day (especially coming from a cold climate). The food was very good. The breakfast is included - it's thorough and delicious. Good coffee. Very good greek salad. The bar area is really charming. We were there on a weekday but apparently on weekends they have a piano player/singer who is great. The owner's sister has recently taken over management of the spa and I'm sure it will be great. If I could give any constructive feedback it would be that we could have used a bit more light in our bathroom. We will definitely stay here again next time in Joburg. Wish we could have stayed longer.

I stayed here on business for two nights and from the moment my colleague and I were met at the airport by 'Lucky' we knew we had struck gold here. A welcome letter in the car started the ball rolling. When we arrived at the hotel we were met by the majority of the staff and served ice tea with hot towels. Our bags were taken to our rooms and wow what rooms. Room 7 has a double shower and a bath - nothing unusual in that ? - but this was on the balcony outside in the fresh air; with a table and chairs. The king size bed, bedroom and bathroom were spotless. Fresh fruit, coffee, complimentary soft drinks, I pod docking station, CD player, fridge - the list goes on. When you retire at night your bed has been turned down and a chocolate and a glass of Amarula awaits to help you unwind. I could go on and on about how fantastic this place is because it is. The staff know your name from the moment you arrive, they tend to your every need, serving drinks and food with glowing smiles. The food is excellent and breakfast is enough to feed the hungriest person. There are two swimming pools, a tennis court and a spa set in beautifully tended gardens. The hotel is a stones throw from Nelson Mandelas house in Houghton. If you need transport then the hotel will arrange it as walking is not recommended, but nothing is too much trouble for anyone, it is simply a magical place to stay!
The only suggestion I have to make this place the all round hotel: would be for a television lounge so as people can watch events together rather than having to cram into someone's bedroom.

We arrived later than planned having been delayed arriving in Pretoria on the Blue Train, when we checked in there seemed to be a query about our booking but it was soon resolved and we were given a glass of sherry while it was sorted out. We had an amazing suite and were really sorry that we were only staying for one night. Unfortunately it rained just after our arrival so we were not able to take advantage of all the facilities, but we did enjoy a very good evening dinner in the restaurant. When we returned to our room we had turn back service, a rose on the bed and two miniature Amarula liquers - what more could you ask for. We were served an excellent breakfast before setting off on the next leg of our journey. The staff were all pleasant and helpful and we will no doubt return here at some time in the future, just the place for a short romantic break.

Stayed here for two nights on business, given Room 5 and must say I was very pleased (bar the non stop rain). Good size bedroom with seperate seating area and a well equipped and clean bathroom. As others have said, felt very welcomed here by all, nothing was an issue particularly when booking cars, food, laundry etc. all undertaken swfitly and professionally.

What sets the Residence above everyone esle is the service and attention to detail.

The food was super, am unable to find fault or negative comment on any - fresh, good quality and well cooked.

The hotel would have benefitted to a guests comfort more if there had been at least one room out of the many that had a TV - CNN/Sky News and ability to sit down with a drink in the evening to watch a game for example than being holed up in the room.

The staff are the Hotels No1 asset - attentive, alert and courteous.

Room Tip: I had room 5 with a wonderful Jacuzzi (couldnt use it), outside shower, private and relaxed
