“African Craft Market”

African Craft Market of Rosebank

The market is one stop shopping with most crafts that are made in SA. You need to bargain and it is difficult to just browse without being asked to "buy" "buy".... You do get some good deals and the upper floor has a number of better quality items. If you have time it is nicer to get your purchases in the rural areas where they are made but if you are short on time it is a good alternative.

Lots of things to see and buy. Just be warned some of the stall people are quite pushy and trying to sell things to you, a quick way to get them away is to tell them you are a local then they immediately shut up.

The craft market is not as big as it used to be, however, it still overs all the traditional items and great prices. Just be careful with wood, and animals products as if not treated and no certificate you could get a R10,000 fine if caught at the airport with these items.

Personally I've never had any issues taken things back, just wrap them up well with your luggage.

Also if you visit on Sunday keep an eye out for the brothers from Ghana. They make excellent key rings from old plastic bands and can spell any name by hand weaving threads of any colour and style. They are located at the top of the stairs. Be warned they do try and over charge you. Don't pay more than R75 for their product. They will negotiate with you.

Enjoy it's a great way to see some great work.

Also the mugg and bean are just in the mall and offer great food for breakfast and lunch. Top notch service

The crafts here are the same that you would find in all the souvenir shops but with much cheaper prices. The stall holders are very friendly and seem to enjoy the haggling. Some great bargains for lovely pieces.

Wide variety and choice! Excellent quality African ornamental items. It offers a rural African experience within a city. Vendors could be overbearing if one is not used to a typical African market shopping style.
