“A Class Facility”

My wife and I stayed at the Johannesburg Hyatt Regency as a base camp for touring Jo’burg after a six day safari. I requested a room with a view upon check-in which we received. The room was large and very clean. The king size bed was very comfortable.

We were there during their slow period evidenced by seeing no more than 40 people during our four-night stay. Our server at breakfast on day 1 did not understand that breakfast was included in our room rate. As it turned out, it was his second day working breakfast. Consequently, service was not up to expectation. Breakfast the following days went as expected, good service. The weather was nice enough to eat breakfast outside on the patio.

We found staff throughout the hotel welcoming and helpful. The Concierge arranged with a taxi driver to take us to the Apartheid Museum for a flat fare of R200 which was a good price. The hotel car was R380. The Concierge instructed the taxi driver to meet us at the museum at the time we designated to bring us back to the hotel. He was there on time.

Check in took way to long. I came in from avery long flight and I was at check in for way too long. My room was quite nice and I did have plenty of space but I had to call 3 times for ice. The club lounge was above average with good service and the food quality throughout the hotel was quite good. The service side lets the hotel down!

Stayed here one night before flying out to Botswana. Arranged hotel pick up and drop to airport. Very smooth. Liked the rooms, but expect nothing different from any standard business hotel. Great selection for breakfast, but not complimentary. Staff at reception were slow and not very service minded. Even gave us first a smoking floor room.

Safe and easy access to all facilities for shopping and eating in Rosebank. Jo'burg being a fairly dangerous city, this was positive for us.

We stayed at the hotel prior to our next day departure to Sydney. The hotel reception staff were friendly and welcoming. We stayed in the Club Lounge Floor and was pleased to see that we got what we booked (not like our poor service at the Westin in Cape Town).

We went into the Club Lounge that evening and I asked for a Gin and Tonic. The service staff member said they did not have any Gin??? I asked if they could go and get some Gin from another bar in the hotel - they did do that but took about 10 minutes. Should I really have to ask???

As per most Hyatt hotels - there is no hot breakfast included in Club Lounge restaurants. We ordered two egg benedict's ie. for two people (at cost) but after 30 minutes they only arrived with one. We ended up having to share one because we did not want to wait another 30 minutes.

Overall an OK stay but wouldn't stay again.

I've spent two wonderful nights at this hotel and would surely recommend it, specially for business travelers, as it is a little bit far from the main turistic atracctions of JoBurg....try the Cosmo at the front bar....

Good: Breakfast buffet, fitness facilities, lots of restaurants in vicinity, mall, cinema in vicinity.

Bad: Service at breakfast buffet. Unfriendly receptionists, in some rooms you cannot open the windows

The property is modern, with a nice spacious restaurant area, rooms are also quite spacious, modern and nicely decorated. Room service, breakfast and restaurants have quite good food.
It would be an excellent hotel if it was not for what I consider two huge problems: noise and service.

Noise: I am noise sensitive and need silence to sleep, nothing out of the ordinary. This hotel is one of the worst I have ever seen in this area; about 60% of the rooms face Oxford/Rivonia Road, a 6 lane road that is busy during the day and where cars speed up at night. The glass windows do not block at all, so you will hear road traffic throughout the night in those rooms. The other 40% of the rooms are garden facing, it should be fine if it was not that on weekends, the lower floor/gardens use to host weddings or other sorts of parties, so on the lower floors the noise is also quite prominent. In addition, the noise from power generators can be heard in several rooms in each floor, and staff seem to have a tendency to do repairs from 8:30-9am on weekends, or talk load at each other as early as 7:30am in the morning.

Service: in general poor, very inefficient and inconsistent. On top of that, I have encountered several cases of plain rudeness. Front-desk staff are the worst, no smiles, take any requests with disdain, and are not very helpful. In general, expect to ask for things several times until something happens (for example laundry: you call them, they'll say someone is coming right away, 15 minutes later you have to call again so they actually send someone). What bothers me the most is not the inefficiency, which granted, happens in many places, but the truly lack of politeness. I have had a staff member raising his voice at me, several times.

In general: if you can't be bothered with noise and don't interact much with staff (ie. no laundry, not special requests to the front-desk, no use of lounges, etc), then you will be fine. Otherwise be careful with this place. The pity is, it would be so easy for these guys to fix the problems.
