“My favourite place in Johannesburg”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

The botanical gardens is in the heart of the city. Regular visitors include families, dog walkers, runners, cyclists, canoeists and those on romantic dates. The gardens are beautiful all year round, especially in Autumn and Spring when you can see the gorgeous trees changing colour or blooming with flowers.

Don't forget to take some bread with you to feed all the ducks and geese, but remember to take your trash home or use the dirt bins.

Lets keep this garden clean.

“Break from the city”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

Emmarentia Dam and gardens are a jewel in the city, where it feels like you have left town. Rolling lawns, a tranquil dam and beautiful gardens combine to make this a place to visit for a break from city life. It is a safe and pleasant place for children as long as you watch them near the water. Dog lovers also have a lot of space to exercise their pets. Try it out - you will go back.

“Excellent Land Art exhibition”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

Emmarentia Dam and the gardens are well frequented by people and their pooches. On weekends, people cycle and canoe on the dam. It is a nice area to walk around and there is a cafe and cloakrooms that are adequate.
Recently a group of artists constructed land art from the surrounds which theoretically would last until nature took its course. I went after a week and some had been absorbed into the ground whereas others, like a huge head constructed of hay and a cosy yet large nest made of branches remained intact. Sadly some of the ostrich eggs had been removed from another which had seeds within which the artist had hoped would seed themselves.
It is a large natural environment which is safe to walk or cycle in and a good break from the stress of the city. The parking is restricted at the main entrance but there are other places to park

“Beautiful Open Space”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

It was a long weekend and we were wondering where to utilize the days without going out of Jo'burg. Got the idea of visiting botanical garden and it was totally worth it. Yes, people might think what to do in a botanical garden whole day long. But if you are a nature lover and like to be under the vast open blue sky and amidst the greens, its a place for you. There is lot of open space and greens where we spent the whole day and yes, we went there for two consecutive days. Me and my husband felt like we are back in our college days ;) and it's free :)

“Beautiful open space”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

This is a lovely space for walks or cycles. Rolling lawns, beautiful trees and plants, small and large dams. You can take children or dogs (on leashes). At the big dam is a rowing club, dinghy sailing club and model boat racing.

Although there have been the odd small crime incidents reported we have walked regularly in the very early morning without problems.
