A few years ago, Melville was really worth visiting with quaint shops, cafes/bistros. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. Area is run-down, dirty and a feeling of safety no longer exists. The little time spent here was too long.

10 years ago this was a cool place, sadly now only students looking for cheap beer in unsophisticated settings. Might be making a come-back, let's see.... Rather go to 44 Stanley next door.

I do. And many others who tend to also be interesting. I'm not sure how gentrified a place needs to be to qualify as "shabby chic", (to respond to the comment made by another reviewer). Students from the two large universities, researchers, artists, film makers, domestic workers, homeless people, family owned and run bakery shops - we all live here. Take up space. And don't demand the aspirational nostalgia for the dodgy project of 'urban village'. Also a great place to live if you have small humans.

Historically, an interesting place. If you are willing to ignore the shabby state of most of the run-down bars and shops (and lovingly call it 'Bohemian'), ignore all the empty shops, ignore the beggars and vagrants, you will enjoy an eclectic vibe. It is however, overrun by students, and whether that is good or bad, is for you to decide. The "antique" shops re-invented the super fine line between junk and antiques. So call it vibey or call it run-down. Both would be accurate - go and decide for yourself!

Melville has a diverse range of eateries on offer, catering to the quick bite fast food lover, as well as many affordable mid to high end diners. From coffee shops to specialty cuisine, Melville has what you want. Some family restaurants have children facilities that will keep them playing & having fun whilst you relax with friends & family. I highly recommend the dining mecca of 7th Street for a delightful eating experience.
