The Oriental Plaza is a fun place to visit with the family. Provided one can bargain there is great value in Materials, Bedding and Clothing and we have always found the quality to be good. This is a safe venue to visit with secure parking. A real bit of india in Johannesburg.

I have been visiting the Oriental Plaza since it was relocated from the streets of Fordsburg. There was much speculation as to whether it would last the year. 43 years later it is still going strong. It has seen change but in essence it remains the same. It is still the best place for the purchase of fabric in Johannesburg, and bargain shopping is still possible. Small individually owned shops that instantly transport one to faraway places, are still around, if more difficult to find. So, samosa in hand and with the smell of incense in my nose the Plaza is a treat.

I have been to Oriental plaza several times, mostly for buying clothes. There are shops selling utensils, leather goods, cell phones and accessories, toys and upholstery. Many shops sell good quality clothes for reasonable price. Also, I enjoy masala chai, samosa and other Indian snacks available. Worth visiting at least once.

Gone are the day when one could saunter around the
Oriental plaza and be mesmerized by the rich bold hue of fabric, enticed by the smell
Of exotic aromas wafting as you looked at this and poked at that in the hope of scoring a bargain, or just enjoying the touch, feel and smell of the east. A place where you could literally buy a chewing gum or a Mercedes, I’ll make a good price. What fond memories.

Today the “China and Pakistani mall” assaults your senses with rudimentary products that are a dime a dozen… what has happened to the friendly aunty that repeated her story of how she lovingly picked over the spices to cook the mutton curry in your bunny, or the uncle who on his trip from “overseas” who just had to stop at a souk in Morocco to buy this one of a kind item for his shop at the Plaza in every colour imaginable.

How I lament the loss of the flavour, flair and uniqueness of the grand old dame the Oriental Plaza as she once stood proud and majestic in all her splendour and glory – only to be raped on mass by the opportunistic mentality of a pavement stallholder in Huizhou Guangdong (China) or Hazro (Pakistan).

The local is lekker appeal has given way to the crude lacklustre vibe of the red-light district in the backstreets of Kamathipura (India) – where you are saddened by the lengths one has to go to survive- but in the end everything is cold, dank and looks the same - a relic where the dancer and drum beat pass each other like a lost ship in the night. As Yiddish sayings go the current state of the Oreintal Plaza is TSUTCHEPPENISH: (Something irritating that attaches itself like an obsession or LOCH IN KOP- Literally a hole in the head, refers to things one definitely does not need.
