Owner description: South African artworks blend with worldwide masterpieces in this elegant museum, considered by many to be the best international art collection in the country.

This is the worst museum I have ever visited. Located in a run down neighborhood, surrounded by homeless sleeping in the park, building in disrepair, grounds filled with trash, the galleries are half empty because previous holdings are missing. So very sad.

JAG has not been much of a priority since the centennial celebrations nearly three decades ago. Access to Joubert Park is not easy and windows should be rolled up and doors locked as you approach. Once inside, amongst the Pierneef Series that hung forgotten in Joburgs train station for untold years, you can find a Rodin sculpture, paintings by Monet, Picasso, Pissaro and even El Greco. Unfortunately this masterpieces are not always on display. My favourite are the works by Sekoto. The building itself tells a lot about Joburg and its relation to art.

This was once a prime art gallery in the country. Alas, no more. The building is in dire need of repair. It feels like a morgue. Many valuable paintings that were once displayed here are no more here.

The JAG has a nice array of paintings and sculptures and is definitely worth a visit if you have a bit of time. It's nice and small, so won't take you too long. A couple of nice pieces and range of classic and modern art.

After a revisit to JAG in June 2013 I decided that I should share this art museum, in the heart of Johannesburg city with more people! The gallery is housed in a beautiful building and ample parking is provided. It is easy to drive there and could be part of a day visit to other attractions in the city. It is located next to Joubert Park. The collection and regular exhibits do ensure the visitor to have a meaningful experience of the art of our multi cultural society ad well as international pieces. The Phillips Gallery was a favorite, but the great William Kentridge video visual exhibition made me so proud to see current local artists being represented. Our guide made sure we had anentertaining and great learning experience. Go and see Monet, Pisarro, Cezanne, Lucienne Freud........ . Yes the building needs maintenance due to water damage, but the art work and very caring staff need 5 star rating and lots of more feet. It is also easy to travel from there to the other galleries such as Everard Read and Goodman, it makes for more than just " a little bit of culture", I recently visited the beautiful South African National Museum/Iziko in Cape Town and believe JAG compares very well.
