If you have time to visit only one art gallery in Johannesburg please pick Wits Art Museum - or WAM as it is locally and affectionately known. This is not really a gallery (nothing is for sale) but a world class art museum showcasing the very best from the entire continent of Africa. The museum is owned and curated and managed by the University of the Witwatersrand and the collection boasts some 10 000 pieces of art - sadly only 10% of which are on display at any one time. But that just means you can go back often and always see something new. The collection is over 60 years old and has been housed until recently on the university campus and not easily viewable for the every day art lover. A year or two ago the entire collection was relocated into an extraordinary building in Braamfontein (just on the edge of JHB CBD - easy to find and easy to park and please don't fret about safety - Joburgers are very nice people!). The building has an NY Guggenheim feel to it and it was renovated for the sole purpose of showcasing this remarkable collection. Whatever you do - don't miss WAM!
