Not a bad place. A few museums ad SA world of beer as well as some restaurants. IT s a stop on the red city tour bus. Nothing bad to say but also nothing too significant either. If your in the area then make a stop if not, I dont think there is enough there to warrant a separate trip to spend time there.

Newtown is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Jo'burg. There are a number of attractions, including the Museum of Africa and the Market Theatre. I had lunch at "Nikki's Oasis", a fun restaurant is also a popular club at night. Nearby is Turbine Hall, an attractive industrial relic that has now been converted to a conference center. Diagonal Street is a short distance away.
Many people obsess about the crime levels in Jo'burg. I found Newtown to be relatively safe (during the day), although I did constantly keep my eyes open to what was going on around me. Don't be afraid to walk around, just be sensible.

This is a fun section which I felt was safe. It's full of little shops, some focus on African goods, some Indian and Middle-Eastern. There are some shops selling tourist/gift stuff, but lots of shops are for the locals and those are more interesting. Some interesting places to eat - including a fast food joint selling African dishes. Diagonal Street was the most interesting bit - don't miss the Muti shop!

I took the Red City Tour of Joburg Bus. Got off at Newtown stop and walked to SAB World of Beer. Felt safe to walk around this area. I also went to Workers Museum, very informative of migration of workers in SA.

Used to go to the market theatre in newtown but it got a bit shoddy at one stage, now there has been lots of renovations and infrastructure put in that it is a pleasure to visit
