We have been staying at Liz at Lancaster for a couple of years, both my husband on business (between 8&10 times) and myself, at leisure! 3 times now. We cannot fault it; from the friendly welcome, even from the dogs, to the comfort, cleanliness, great breakfasts and no problem attitude to any small troubles or big requests we might have.
Liz is a fount of knowledge about pretty much everything and her "staff" are much more than just that. Thoughtful and considerate at all times. We look forward to each trip.

Your considered review of your stay with us is much appreciated. The fedback from regular guests who keep returning is so valued and it is good to know that the needs of both the business and leisure traveller are well catered for here. Liz and her staff look forward to welcoming you back on your next trip to South Africa. All the best from Liz, Zac, Catherine and Thandi

We spent three weeks in South Africa for the World Cup and our stay with Liz at Lancaster in Johannesburg was by far the most comfortable and pleasant. Liz and her staff are incredibly helpful and friendly, and the rooms are very comfortable, well-equipped and secure. Even with the hectic pace of the World Cup (and a constant stream of multicultural visitors), Liz always took the time to make her visitors feel welcome, regularly suggesting dining and entertainment recommendations and pausing to have a friendly chat at breakfast. Breakfast, by the way, is delicious (the croissants!) and served in a beautiful, sunny dining room with a large, cozy fireplace and view of the lovely grounds.

When our travel plans changed after the Round of 16 (and Liz at Lancaster was already booked), Liz worked diligently to find other available guesthouses for us. She booked our rooms at two other guesthouses (one in JoBurg and one in Rustenburg), and she even arranged for our rental car and printed maps so we could find our way to various destinations. Liz became our "go-to" person (far above and beyond the call of duty), cheerfully answering our relentless questions whenever we called or emailed--even when we were staying in other cities. She is an amazing, one-woman trip coordinator; we're convinced that Liz could run the world with a phone and a laptop!

The guesthouse has immaculate grounds, a welcoming atmosphere and is located in a beautiful, convenient neighborhood. It's a less-than-10-minute taxi ride to the train station and Mandela Square, and cab drivers can find it with ease (not always the case in JoBurg, we learned.)

We highly recommend Liz at Lancaster if you're planning a stay in Johannesburg. It's the only guesthouse in Johannesburg we will consider when we return to South Africa--we promise we won't let Molly (the charming yellow lab) stand too close to the space-heater next time, Liz!

The World Cup was hard work for us all here at Liz at Lancaster but we loved every second of it as the guests from all over the world were just wonderful. When we could not accomodate guests it was such a pleasure to ensure that they were well looked after elsewhere as we just loved having the World come to our Party. We missed you all when you left. Thank you RoamingRadas for your extensive and considered review and the positive feedback. As much as you liked staying here, we enjoyed having you to stay and ensuring that you left South Africa wanting to return. All the best from Liz, Zac, Catherine and Thandi

Every detail was considered when putting together the rooms at Liz's B&B, from the electric blankets (July is cold!) to the lists of available radio stations and TV channels. We only had one full day in Johannesburg, and after a chat with Liz about our interests, she drew up a possible itinerary for us, even taking driving distances and opening hours into account. We were very well taken care of and had a very memorable time in Johannesburg.

Liz at Lancaster was amazing!! I highly recommended it. It was clean, quiet, beautiful, and elegant. It not only has basic amenities but also nice touches like heated floors!! I will definitely stay there when I am back in Joberg again.

It's one of the best B&B places in johannesburg to stay - nice rooms / appartments with a good kitchen and lot of facilities to make your own meal.
Very clean rooms and the best: very helpful Liz & Zac and the others to provide you with tons of information about JoBurg and things you can do in Craighall and arround.

Great service and friendly atmosphere. Accomodations are clean and well appointed. Liz was very helpful to us in recommending restaurants & attractions, and had courteous drivers available at all times to transport us around the city. Definitely would stay there again. Neighborhood was a little out of the way, but easy enough to get around by car.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
One of the first guesthouses to open in the Rosebank Region some 19 years ago, Liz at Lancaster has built a strong reputation based on excellent personal service, great comfort, convenient location, seclusion and privacy. Given recognition for this in 2011 with an AA Accommodation Award for ‘People who go the extra mile’, an AA Accommodation in 2012 for 'Traveller's best value', Liz at Lancaster was also voted a finalist three years in a row in the AA 2010, 2011 & 2012 Accommodation Awards. We are included in Greenwood Guides Handpicked Accommodation. But perhaps most telling of all are our guest comments: ‘We loved the peace and privacy – we didn’t even know there were other guests here.’ ‘Craighall Park is such a central location – under 10 minutes from Rosebank and Melrose Arch and less than 15 minutes to Sandton Central. Even Parktown and Joburg Central are easily accessible – it took us 12 minutes to Wits.’ ‘Superb service and such comfortable spacious rooms’. ‘The on-site transport was a real added bonus.’ ‘Your Joburg information booklet in our room was amazingly helpful and useful.’ It is a mere 12 minute ride from O.R Tambio International Airport to the Rosebank Gautrain Station which is only 3.5 km from Liz at Lancaster. You can either pick up your rental car when you arrive at the station, or phone us for a transfer – a real added convenience. With 7 very private individual units all with separate entrances and kitchenettes offering self-catering options, Liz at Lancaster is ideal for long stays whether for business travelers or for those relocating. Rates drop for weekly and monthly stays. There are 2 standard spacious double rooms (25 & 30 m²), 3 studio flatlets (55 m²), and 2 one-bedroom cottages (80 m²) each with separate living/dining room and open plan kitchen. All lead onto their own enclosed courtyards where you can enjoy your privacy on a warm Highveld summer evening while sipping at a sundowner from your mini-bar. During our chilly Jozi winter months you will be warmly snug with under-carpet heating and electric blankets. All units have shower and bath, ample well-lit work areas/dining tables, separate sitting area, broadband WiFi connection, flat screen TVs and DSTV with own decoders (25 channels), overhead fans, convenient luxuries like hairdryers, toweling gowns, radio clock alarms, luxurious cotton percale linen, a house branded range of natural toiletries and on-the-house E-spring filtered water. Delicious breakfasts are served to order on the breakfast patio which opens out onto the garden in summer and is warmed by a roaring log fire in winter. There is ample secure off-street undercover parking. We offer a same day laundry service and on-site transport at very reasonable rates. All credit cards including Diners and American Express are accepted. Liz and two staff live on site and are always at the other end of the internal intercoms. As Liz taught Art History and Heritage at Wits University for 25 years, she keeps abreast with cultural events and has quite an extensive library. A further bonus of staying at Liz at Lancaster is the convenience of the neighbourhood shops at the end of the block: a 7-7 grocery store, a chemist, restaurant, etc. ... more   less
