“Food for thought”
Reviewed 27 June 2014

Was excited to see the variety of food available at the Market on Main, with the buzz of people talking and moving around between the isles, I just wish I could have tried a little bit of everything. There is a very relaxed atmosphere, with music, art and food makes a good Sunday out of the house.

“A let down!!!!”
Reviewed 23 June 2014

After seeing all the reviews regarding Maboneng, we decided to take guests from the UK to experience this initiative on Saturday. The result was disappointment. Yes, there are no large chains and the small shops are inside shipping containers, but there were very few that were open, including the information kiosk. Unfortunately, very little time was spent at Maboneng. After all the hype - it was a let down.

Hey Sandy

Thank you for review.
We unfortunately do not have large chain stores as we promote authentic small businesses. Most stores open between 11am and 5pm on a Saturday. The next time you visit the neighbourhood feel free to check out the container shops at Mainstreet Bizaar and our other infor station at 302 Fox street, Curiocity Backpackers.
There is also Arts on Main at 264 Fox street, with retail components, galleries and restaurants.
Looking forward to having you in the neighbourhood in the near future..

“Everybody loves Maboneng”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

Maboneng is the best example of how private initiative can realize big inner city change. This little precinct has grown to become one of the city's hotspot. But with a very relaxed atmosphere. Go and check it out on a Thursday night or on Sunday Morning when there is the famous Market on Main. You will love it!

“Walk the streets of Jozi in safety and a wonderful vibe”
Reviewed 7 June 2014

Maboneng District is the result of the Johannesburg Inner City Renewal Project. It is a wonderful, safe area to spend a day in, walking the streets, with plenty of small shops, galleries and restaurants. Child friendly, but do avoid the surrounding areas that are NOT part of the renewal project (you will easily see the boundaries). Some excellent eateries serving 'traditional African' fare.

Thank you for the review..
The neighbourhood is continuously growing and in doing so, integrating with the surroundings and creating a safe space for people from all walks of life to enjoy the east side of Johannesburg innercity. Looking forward to hosting you again. Book a tour with Mainstreetwalks and get to see some of the new developments and the hidden treasures within the neighbourhood.

“Great and off beat... very hip and NOT pretentious. Shopping, crafts. Authentic. Good roof top views of Johannesburg”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

Wandered in to this 4-5 block area called "The Light" - very very cool shops - NO chains or big stores you'll see anywhere else. Art galleries and shared spaces... some inside shipping containers as self-contained 'stores' within a larger space. Crafts... mostly made by artists within SA.
A very wonderful rooftop bar called The Living Room -- it's on the 5th floor of an otherwise non-descriptive office building... ask for directions...
Warning - things tend to close up early on Saturday.... most stores dark by 430p... we arrived late and rushed.
Very attractive bars...

This was a racially mixed neighborhood - tended to be most younger 20-40's. Welcoming and everyone there had big smiles.

Wished we would have had more time.
