We did the Inner City tour. We had an absolutely brilliant day exploring the city and seeing how Johannesburg is becoming rejuvenated and modernised. It totally changed my perception of Johannesburg. We had an absolute legend of a tour guide ("King") and he planned out a great itinerary. Highly recommended.

NB It seems that Mainstreetwalks (recommended by Lonely Planet) is now organised by Curiocity Backpackers, so I'd recommend checking out their reviews too if you're interested. This entry doesn't have many reviews and they're mostly negative, which I don't think at all represents the fantastic experience we had.

We took the Soweto Tour and were very disappointed. The guide spent virtually the entire time we were riding in the mini-van chatting with the driver instead of telling us about the sights and scenes along the route. This accounted for a majority of the tour time given the distances involved. In addition to not imparting potentially interesting and useful information, this lack of communication during the ride resulted in wasting time at stops causing the tour to have minimal time at the Hector Peterson Museum and Vilakazi Street which was very unfortunate as they should have been tour highlights.

When we waited for two other possible participants, the guide remarked that if they did not show up then this tour is not going to happen. Ten minutes after the tour should have started I did not believe that the tour was going to be, and to be able to reach the start point of an alternative, unrelated tour, I decided to leave. Mainstreetwalks ought to be more transparent about when they want to cancel a tour. I am a single traveler. If they do not want to go through with a tour with only one participant, then please state this upfront. This was a waste of time
