“African Sky needs some upgrading...”
Reviewed 1 June 2009

First i want to say, that having my own car the directions were spot on, always a good thing when you are somewhere new. That said, i gathered the owner was there based on a phone call but despite our pleasant emails never came out to say hello and felt the place was basically unmanaged.

That all said, the main area seems nice enough for the price and their offer for transport was reasonable $20. We had a decent dinner and breakfast i recall nothing to write home about but fine considering this isn't high end accommodations.

The main room area was neat and seemed clean but the bathrooms need a good scrubbing and a color overhaul as even if cleaned (and they weren't that clean, dusty, some bugs etc) they had a dirty color scheme and just were dated. Great shower pressure though!

If you need an adequate place for a reasonable rate this may prove ok but for a few bucks more you might find a better option. I also received a discount because i asked.

Flying in and out of Jo Berg airport, we stayed at the Sun International one way and were looking for a guest house alternative on the flight home since we had a 24 hour layover.

Although the main house is fine, the food was good and the staff pleasant, the rooms felt dirty. Carpets and drapes have not been updated in probably 30 years, furniture was motel 6 rejects and room was full of mosquitos and flies when we arrived. We seriously thought about calling the driver to take us back to the airport. In our month stay in Africa, it was the first time we were seriously concerned regarding potential malaria bites.
Following morning, we asked about getting a driver to take us to the mall to kill some time. They requested $450 rand (about $50 US) for the 20 minute drive.
Although we almost always stay at guest houses instead of hotels, in this case, I would say the Sun International is a better and more pleasant stay.

My husband & I stayed at the AfricaSky Guest House on our first and last nights in South Africa & couldn't have asked for better. We were picked up from the airport at Johannesburg both times by Peter & transported the short distance to our accommodation. Everything is clean & well kept, the rooms are great, staff wonderful & breakfast & dinner excellent. Deidre ( the owner) was very helpful & informative & arranged a guide to take us on a tour to Soweto (also excellent). If we have the opportunity to travel to SA again I would definitely stay at the Africa Sky.

Having stayed a few times now at the Africa Sky guest house we have never been disappointed. Each room is slightly different but they are all beautifully appointed and maintained. The owners and staff are all so helpful and friendly too.

There is a small restaurant and the food is great and an honesty bar in the lounge area. There is enormous attention to detail everywhere, from the dinning room settings to each room.

It's location just a short distance from the airport is great, and it's even easy to find if you are driving a hire car from the airport. The trip only took about 15 mins. Alternatively a pick up or drop off at the airport can be arranged on request.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this guest house as I know you'll enjoy the stay.

Africa Sky Guest House is a gem and a safe oasis located just 15 min. from Johannesburg airport. The owners provided our transportation to/from the airport. The owners were friendly, the accommodations were large and lovely, and the grounds and gardens were stunning. The dinner we had in their beautiful dining room was the best food either of us had enjoyed in years. A wonderful breakfast was included. We appreciated their attention to the smallest details, both in our accommodations and our dining experiences.

We stayed at the Africa Sky Guesthouse in March 2008. It is better than wonderful for a one night stop-over in Johannesburg-- and not too expensive. The guesthouse itself looks like a huge renovated mansion-- the family still lives there and they have 16
guest bedrooms all with their own bathrooms. Our room was on a wing that was just outside the pool. The guesthouse was completely booked when we stayed there. Deidre Bekker was our hostess and made sure everything was taken care of. The guesthouse offers a complimentary wonderful breakfast (they make omelets to order and have a continental breakfast) and offer free transfer from the airport. They can provide return transfer for a minimal fee. They can also provide dinner if you let them know in advance.
