Excellent location if like me you are a bit nervy about Johanesburg. We were overnighting here before getting small plane out to safari park having landed in from Sydney. We were landing in at 4pm J'burg time but for our body clocks this was about midnight. Just me and my 9 y/o daughter and I wanted a no hassle option for us to get a good nights sleep. And City Lodge Or Tambo fitted the bill.

It is located literally minutes walk from arrivals. Basically above the airport carpark so you walk along a walkway with the other travelers going to their vehicles and there you are.i felt perfectly safe. It is well signed and I had Emailed the hotel ahead and got directions as the last thing I wanted was my daughter and I hanging around with our luggage looking lost. But as it was we just zipped along with our trolley, located the lift that takes you up to the City Losge reception and were in our room within 15 mins of exiting arrivals.

Room basic but everything we needed. It's budget but clean, comfortable and a good size. And QUIET. We were understandably exhausted and in bed asleep by 7pm totally undisturbed. We only paid ZAR1,400 for our room with two good sized beds in it and good sized bathroom with full bath an shower. I thought this was excellent value for what we were getting. Don't expect the Ritz bit there are no nasty surprises.

The common areas also good - spacious and clean. Never seemed to get very crowded. We had a long airport wait before check in on our return journey as only one flight out to Sydney a day. So rather than spend hours at Or Tambo once the little plane had brought us back in from the game park at the hideously busy crowded noisy Or Tambo waiting for our check in to open we just wheeled our bags back around to City Losge which was like a calm oasis in comparison bought coffees and lunch in their coffee shop (which was deserted and we were fighting for a seat at the airport) far better quality and CHEAPER!!!! And bottom line I felt totally safe and was able to relax and not be constantly watching my luggage. Not sure if we will be back in Jo'burg airport like this but would be back to City Lodge in a shot.

I've stayed in this hotel multiple times over the past 3 years; we use this as our standard transit hotel if our connecting flights require an overnight stay in Johannesburg. Our most recent stay was in August 2012.

The hotel is located on airport grounds, about a 10 minute walk via an indoor walkway from the terminal area of OR Tambo Int'l Airport. This is nice so you don't have to worry about crime or weather if staying there. They supply you with a glass of fruit juice at check in which impressed my wife. You can roll the airport push carts with your luggage all the way to the hotel elevator where you can then ask one of the very helpful bellhops to assist with the transfer into the hotel.

Check in can have a line during busy times (Fri and Sun evenings) but is generally painless. They have a computer and printer you can access if you need to print documents. No kids activities or play areas, but then that's not really the point so it shouldn't really be expected.

Rooms in my experience are not huge but not closet sized either. I've routinely stayed in a standard queen with my wife and two babies and it was quite comfortable. The rooms are well appointed and quiet although the layout of the building means it can be a longer walk than you expected from the reception.

Breakfast can be had for typically elevated airport pricing but overall the room rates seem quite reasonable to me for the quality of the hotel. This is a good choice for early or late flights considering the price and the competition. The Intercontinental is right next door but will cost nearly $300 or $400 per night (but go for it if you that's your thing) and the Protea, the other transit hotel on airport property has rooms that are very small.

Overall the staff is friendly, the food is edible though not excellent, and the rooms are clean and quiet. Pretty much all you need for a transit hotel, which this hotel should only be considered as.

I recommend it to all my friends and family that come through and as mentioned, we use it for all our overnights in Jo'burg.

Room Tip: Ask for one closer to reception, so you don't have to walk a kilometer (literally).

We stayed here in September, the night before our flight. Our room was in a quiet wing of the hotel. The staff were very friendly. The room was a decent size, very clean. We had a good breakfast. We will definitely stay here again if we have to be at the airport early in the morning.

This is a perfectly adequate transit hotel for one night. You can walk to it from the airport without going outside. (long slope to pull the cases up, then lift to reception). Rooms comfortable and well furnished and clean. Good buffet breakfast with eggs cooked to order. Otherwise the restaurant offering is pretty basic. We walked to the Intercontinental hotel (10 mins, mostly under cover). Quills Restaurant there is excellent for dinner.
City Lodge advertise a 'rooftop terrace'. Actualy it is more a 'roof well' as it is surrounded by 2 stories of the building. Quite pleasant if you manage to catch it at a moment when the sun finds its way in.

Room Tip: Avoid a room facing the airport. Can be noisy even with the windows shut

Very good location, just 10/15 minutes walk to international terminal, mainly taking into account the chaos in OR Tambo for checking in for flights.
Fast check in, even faster check out, 15 minutes of free wi-fi, connecting rooms necessary for more than 2.
Big bathroom with tub and separate shower. Clean but not spottless.
Didn't use anything, we had dinner and breakfast at the terminal restaurants.
