Comfortable little to no frills lodge adjacent to the JNB airport that meets your basic necessities while providing you with a homey feel.
During a 2-night stopover in Joburg on our way the neighboring country of Botswana we stayed at the Aero Guest Lodge. Upon arrival to JNB airport we quickly called the lodge for our courtesy pick-up. They provided a detailed email of how to contact them and where to meet the driver. (Note – when calling from a US cell phone, replace the '0' in the phone number with a + sign and then dial as listed.) The driver only takes about 10 mins to arrive and meets you at the large Information stand near the arrivals door. While you wait, this is a great time to exchange money or hit up the ATM. Our driver met us, gathered all of our luggage and the commute was a short 5-7 mins.
Upon arrival we were given the tour of the small establishment and shown to our room. The lodge is set up like a small B&B but each room has a private bath. The grounds offer outdoor seating and patio areas, a small pool with lounge chairs and a small nearby dining area. The rooms are no-frills, but offer comfortable accommodations. Keep in mind if you're traveling from the States or other first-world countries – you won't find air-conditioning, wash-cloths, shower curtains on the shower, all of the lights/switches working or other basic necessities you may find elsewhere. They do have a simple television with about 20 channels, a fan to cool the room and bath towels. The bathroom in the family suite has both a shower and a tub. The family suite has a king bed and a set of bunk beds that will accommodate up to 4 persons total. The lodge provides a full breakfast of juices, coffee, tea, toast, eggs (cooked to order) bacon, yogurt, cereals, muffins and fruit. We weren't at the lodge for lunch, so we can't speak on that, but we did enjoy dinner nightly from 1900-2100. Dinner is NOT included and the small menu of 6-8 offerings regularly changes. There is an honesty bar for drinks (sodas, juices, milk, beer, wine and spirits). You tally your drinks and they will be charged to your room.
If you're interested in touring Joburg during your stay the front desk can recommend drivers and tour companies to take you around. We were given a 5-hour tour for around 500R per person. Our tour included the Apartheid Museum, the Top of Africa, a driving tour of Joburg and even a stop at a local market to grab snacks and beverages. We were thankful for our great tour guide!
If stopping through JNB we would consider the Aero again, but we may be also inclined to check out some of the other properties nearby.
