“Perfect for a one night stopover - do your research first and you will enjoy it.”
Reviewed 9 November 2013

We stayed at the Peermont as a one night stopover in Johannesburg. It is only 10 mins from the airport and there are shuttle buses that run between the hotel and airport but we had a private transfer organised. When you step in the lobby, you realise this is a bit flashier and baroque than your normal hotel. The front desk were very professional and swiftly ensconced in our room. The rooms are a good standard but the bathrooms are rather poky and having to have a shower in the bath is rather old fashioned for a modern hotel. It is worth noting that the rooms only have the south african plug which doesn’t work with any of the standard international adaptors but fortunately the conceirge were able to lend us a couple. We had WIFI included in our room rate and it was very fast. The pool area and pool looked excellent (large and clean) but as we arrived late we were unfortunately did not have time to try it out.

Although we did not stay in the hotel to go to the casino, we could not resist having a look around and the hotel is directly connected to the casino through a walkway decorated with reproductions of ‘old masters’. It is worth going to the casino just to watch, as entertaining as the safari we had just been on. Linked to the Casino is a food court with a number of different cuisines - Portuguese, Indian, Sushi, Chinese, Steakhouse, Fast Food etc. Therefore you can access all these without going outside and there are plenty of security around for the casino. We ate at ‘Tribes’ and had an excellent steak.

The breakfast buffet is plentiful and there are options from around the world - options include szushi, India, waffles, full English including 3 different types of sausages. You need to ask for toast though.

If you are looking for an ‘african’ experience, this is not the hotel for you. If you are looking for a safe, convenient stopover close to the airport to freshen up after safari with the added interest of people watching in the casino, this is a winner and we would return.

Hotel is very close to the airport with hotel transportation. The rooms were very nice and the staff was very accommodating. A huge choice of restaurants at Emperors Palace although none are very special.

The room itself was cozy and clean. The mattress was firm. It's perfectly fine if you're only spending one night to catch a flight or if you plan to spend all your time in the casino. The breakfast buffet was surprisingly good, lots of choice and great croissants.

The casino itself is a pretty horrid greco-roman fantasy mess with people just hanging out, watching other people gamble and even talking to them - something i've never experienced in vegas and was a bit uncomfortable. i only played the slots, some of the machines are relatively new and the lower value machines played ok. and they charge for drinks!

There were three problems that bear noting:
- the airport shuttle doesn't actually stop at the terminals! it stops at an unenclosed parking lot about a 10 minute walk from the check-in counters, and there's at least one escalator along the way. there are trolleys for your luggage which are built to negotiate the escalators. there are people just hanging out at and inside the airport waiting to help people (for a small tip), which was helpful as the signage is pretty bad. allow at least 30 minutes from the hotel to the check in counter, as in addition to the walk the shuttle also stops at the two other hotels in the complex.
- the rooms at the back (odd number rooms) seem to be above a restaurant or restaurant exhaust. close the windows and no problem but definitely cannot keep window open
- wifi non existent in my room at least. i couldn't determine whether the routers were, so don't know what rooms would have working wifi. i was towards the end of the building away from the elevators.

At the outset let me say that this review and rating refers specifically to the Convention Centre where we attended a function and NOT any of the hotels at the complex.

As zooty as the Convention Centre looks don't be fooled.

The function was held in the Assembly 1 & 2 function rooms. The moment we walked into the room you could feel the unpleasant heat caused by a lack of or faulty air conditioning. It wasn't just me either. Other guys immediately took off their jackets on entering too (a social no-no at a black tie event). We asked at least twice to have the temperature turned down but our requests fell on deaf ears.

The next problem was our drinks waitress. She just couldn't get an order right the whole night.

Thirdly, there were no arrangements made for smoking. You literally had to go on a long walk all the way back to the front entrance or alternatively go on an equally long walk to the casino where smoking is permitted. I found this extremely irritating because I have been to this place before on a couple of occasions and on those occasions we had access to close by doorways where you could go outside for a cigarette without needing to enter a "walk for life" competition.

What a night!

This hotel is 100% Vegas, If you come to this hotel expecting a taste of Africa you will be disappointment. According to a staff member it was once a Caesars Palace hotel and casino. The best way to describe it is a small Caesars Palace. For me this was a very exquisite way to start my trip to Africa. We spent one night there and flew out the next day. Here is the low down

LOCATION -- Right next to the airport. For approximately $15 you can have a hotel car pic you up for a short 5 minute drive to the hotel.

FOOD -- The Casino/Plaza area offer many surprisingly reasonably priced options. We ate at the Greek restaurant for under $40. There is also an African, Indian, English and many other food options to chose from. Even a Hooters.

ROOM -- Stuffed full with beautiful amenities similar to a Vegas hotel room. Our room had high quality robs on the bed with rose petals on top. The room does have a safe. The only issue with the room I had was the size. it was small with just extra room for the bed and a chair not a couch. There is also a small half balcony. Bedding was also of very high quality.

STAFF -- Top notch, with no one asking for tips. We had access to the club lounge on the 5th floor with special concierges services and they were very helpful.

Would I stay there again, Yes. It is a great place to start or end a trip that centers around the Joe' Berg airport. There is plenty of entertainment and reasonably prices food options.

Room Tip: Try to get on the club floor or 5th floor

We originally booked two separate nights travelling through Jo'burg airport. On arrival at the hotel we were greeted by an overfamiliar doorman. On checking we were asked for, not just a credit card, but the security PIN number to accompany it, which we declined to give.

We refused the first room we were giving. It was above the kitchen and the smell of cooking fat was overpowering. The second room was clean, quiet and comfortable, if somewhat garish.

The hotel itself was unbelievably trashy in terms of taste and ambiance. I cannot help but feel that the designer was given a huge budget and was just taking the piss. Everything was over the top from the faux antiques to ghastly imitation old masters.

We ate our evening meal in the central food court attached to the casino and spent a comfortable night in our room. The next morning, we noticed a discrepancy with our flight details which necessitated a local call to our travel agent. The hotel refused to allow the call as we had 'no credit' because of the issue with the PIN number. However, we were assisted by someone from guest services, who did have right attitude to her job and proved to be the one asset that this hotel had that was worth mentioning (Thank you, Sheena).

I admit that some people would love this hotel. It was not us and you can't win them all. However, there is no excuse for the poor service that we receieved and the unhelpful attitudes in what was a difficult situation. We cancelled our subsequent stay and had a much better experience in the Intercontinental, which was more conveniently located in addition.

This is actually a difficult review to write because the experience is oddly mixed. Like most things, your experience at D'oreale Grande will probably be heavily influenced by your expectations and your personal taste.

The place bills itself as a five star hotel, so it's okay to expect quality service. You will get that. The place (well at least the Emperor's Palace complex, of which this would be the jewel in the crown) also bills itself as 'The Vegas of Africa', so it's okay to expect ridiculous, ostentatious junk at every turn. You will get that.

There is very little about this place that feels to be real. The marble, the gold, the drapes and tassels on everything are over the top and look like a Hollywood set. In that sense you can actually have a lot of fun pretending to be in a really classy movie or something. However the classic old hotels of that style are usually found in places where you would be in the thick of an exotic new city and they have a history and character to them that you simply can't recreate.

This hotel is attached to an enormous casino complex. There are people inside who may not have emerged into daylight for several weeks. The main 'streets' of the hotel/casino/entertainment complex are regulated by a genuinely confronting artificial light that casts a mid-morning glow across most of the 'outdoor' areas of the casino. Complete with paved walkways and street signs, you can casually stroll through the halls of the complex - thankfully never actually venturing outside! - to find several bars, a myriad of restaurants (from fast-food burger joints through to mid range dining and one fine), a cinema and a couple of theatres. It is all surrounded by an enormous car park that acts as a sort of moat in case anyone tries to escape Emperor's Palace for the rest of the city.

To be fair, D'oreale Grand - unlike some other hotels at Emperor's Palace - has a very nice pool and garden area. They feature al fresco dining during the day and poolside beers and cocktails that were very pleasant. The hotel is close to the airport and offers free transfers which is really helpful.

Inside the room, everything was fine. No, it was very nice. The bathroom was big and new and clean. The bed was broad, the sheets a nice thick cotton and freshly pressed. There was cable TV and a genuinely good looking room service menu. There was a serious problem with the internet and it chugged along at a snails pace, but you could go to another hotel if you needed fast connection speed.

There was a spa on site that sounded very nice, but I didn't have time for a visit.

Look, the hotel will really suit some people. I found it very clean, pretty well organised and had the various features that one would expect from a five star hotel (except that old wifi!). But it lacked something else...something intangible perhaps. I only stayed overnight on a transit to Victoria Falls, so I didn't really care. But I didn't stay there on the return leg of my trip and wouldn't stay there again. Not because it was poor quality, or wildly priced or there was something particularly grotesque in the shower... but because there are just more interesting and fun places to stay elsewhere.

Room Tip: Try getting a deal on Agoda or a similar site. I did and saved about half!
