We were bumped by Air France at Jo'burg and had to get a hotel for the night. Air France got us a good deal here and initial impressions were good. Clean and elegant reception but no restaurant (loads nearby so understandable). It's adjacent to a massive casino/ hotel/ restaurant complex. It was when we got to the room that the opinion dropped 2 stars.....

Quite simply, the smallest room ever in 40 years of travelling and NO REAL BATHROOM! True that it had an OK shower and a tiny, tiny toilet but only one door for the two on a swing hinge. Not even a closed top, just a curtain which is ridiculous. Zero privacy and totally unacceptable. Never again. The old saying...."not enough room to swing a cat" didn't apply as the cat couldn't get in! Beds small, almost touching and impossible to get out of one side on the bed nearest the curtain.

Don't get me wrong. It was clean, bright and had the basics but at the rack rate (about 150 gbp) it would be a joke. Fortunately we got it cheap.

Breakfast wa good though and included. Free luggage storage, extremely clean and excellent staff so it's not all bad...just the standard room..... I guess there were upgrades though.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade!

On a arrival we asked the receptionist (3 times) for an airport facing room, and 3 times she said yes only to find we were NOT airport facing.

Rooms are very basic (but clean), the toilet / shower set with a swing door between both the shower and the toilet is tricky.

Wi-Fi and internet access is available in the business area, and there is a bar area down stairs (smoking area, which is offputting if you are a non-smoker) - the bar area lack atmosphere.

Breakfast is great but again not well managed. There were loads of 4 seater tables with only ONE guest sitting at it and loads of families/groups waiting for a table. It should be better managed and controlled. Too many long queues waiting for your omlette.

Shuttle between the airport and the hotel. Hotel close to restaurants and movie theatre.

Room Tip: if you like plane watching, ask for an airport facing room.

A good option if you need to stay close to OR Tambo Airport. Clean but small rooms and a rather unusual single swing-door for the shower and toilet which may not suit everybody!
Breakfast is included which makes it a good deal, as the buffet breakfast was top notch.
Long queues at reception however to both check-in and collect bags.

Spent 10 nights here on business. As other have observed, the rooms are very small and there is no real separation between bathroom and bedroom. It's not the place I'd stay any more than a night as a couple. But by myself as a business hotel, it was fine and quite good value. The room was comfortable, the cable connected internet (ZAR399 for 5 days but no wifi in the rooms...only common areas) performed decently well, breakfast was outstandingly good and the staff were friendly and generally excellent. Dinner was bundled too (Queen of the Nile "all you can eat") but I only ate there once and it was very very average. There lots of eating options in the Emperor's Palace complex though. None of them are truly great, but some of them are quite decent if you are after a simple piece of grilled meat (Tribes was probably my favourite). The hotel has a nice pool area and quests have access to a (pretty ordinary but workable) gym at the 5-star D'Oreal Grande Hotel in the complex (which reminded me of a chintzy "B" grade Bellagio).

Overall though, it's really quite a good value hotel. My only advice is to ask for a room on the non-airport side (unless you are an avid plane spotter). Sure the view is not as interesting, but when the runway was operating S-to-N it could get quite noisy. The rooms on that side of the hotel really should have been double-glazed.

I have to go back in May, but I'll probably stay at the 4-start Mondior next time.

Room Tip: Be wary about staying on the airport side.

We needed a place close to the airport for a decent price and this worked. I was pleasently surprised to find out it was inside a gaming resort so there were lots of food options and places to visit without going far. Johannesburg has a bad reputation so we didn't want to wander about, just catch our flight out. The room was small but big enough for an overnight and a little kitschy with a couple of nudes painted on the wall.

Room Tip: We stayed in a room opposite the elevator and never noticed it.

This hotel was very hip and new. However, the entire single room with bathtub next to the bed and having one door that swings a full 180 degrees to either enclose the shower or the toilet is a little funny, especially as it's only frosted glass.

The accommodations were fine, it was comfortable and really we were there to run around in the casino. The free breakfast was great (we did some couples special which had that and a free dinner included - go to the website, I think they always have something running)

It was convenient, shuttle to and from the airport and it was clean and a good experience.
