Conveniently situated in the heart of Newlands; friendly welcome from owner & his wife; extensive menu; good wine list; friendly & efficient waiting staff; food arrived promptly & it was nice & hot.....

Literally ate ourselves to a standstill - choose a set meal from the set meals option - because I'm really too lazy to troll right through the extensive menu - but I did see some interesting choices which I'll have to try on future visits.

Thank Marguerite W

What a disappointment! I have never written a review like this, but feel compelled to in this case. We have had some good meals at this restaurant over the years, and on this recommendation, had ordered takeaways this evening. When a Chinese restaurant resorts to using frozen mixed veg to 'pad' the meal(corn with chopped carrots, peas and green beans),you know something is wrong. With the exception of the crispy kingklip, the rest was below mediocre and flavorless. The Shanghai 'steak' was thick chunks of unidentifiable meat, the cashew nut chicken was colourless, flavorless and smothered in thick chunks of green pepper( and the frozen veg!), and the seafood fried rice was padded with the same frozen mixed veg, and big chunks of processed crab meat and the very occasional calamari tentacle . What happened Tai Ping???? Where were all those lovely Chinese flavors? It's very sad when a restaurant that has been around a while lets itself down in this way.

Fast service, good value, they use very fresh ingredients and give generous portions- a long-running Rondebosch institution and for good reason.

My family has just celebrated our daughter's recent marriage at the Tai Ping in Newlands. We couldn't have made a wiser choice. It wasn't easy to cater for our party of 75 people, but nothing was too much for the owners, Colin and Pam.

They assisted us in choosing the dishes (traditionally, nine in number) and were always prepared to make changes to the menu. They also made sure that all our guests were catered for, including those who were vegetarian or allergic to certain dishes.

For variety, good service and value for money, Tai Ping is hard to beat.

Cape Town has seen (no doubt like many places elsewhere, a huge number of new 'hole-in-the-wall Chinese food venues, trying to appeal to everyone ie. Chinese, Thai and Sushi all on offer), in amongst the Asian venues geared for group tours. Tai Ping owned by the charming Pam and Colin, Chinese South Africans have for years now provided a warm welcome, quality and good clean Chinese cuisine in the suburb of Newlands, close to the city's cricket and rugby stadiums. A loyal local following, it is understated yet provides consistent quality and BYO is welcomed.
