“Lovely hotel, service can be better”
Reviewed 3 April 2014 via mobile

We stayed here in March 2014 for a wedding. Remains a fabulous hotel with a great view of the mountains. The gardens are simply gorgeous. Our room was excellent, a garden suite, one of the best I have stayed in. It had a lovely little sitting room, a nespresso coffee machine, king sized bed and an amazing private patio. I would definitely come again, even if it is just for the room and the garden.

But, I do feel that the service at the restaurants are going backwards. I have stayed at the Vineyard on numerous other occasions. Although the food was excellent, we had to wait for the bill for example for quite some time, or there were no butter on the table and we waited a long time after requesting it. At the wedding venue there were no small plates or butter knifes on the table. We also had to request cutlery to eat dessert. If the hotel can fix these minor issues it would truly be a memorable stay.

On revisiting this gracious hotel where we had our wedding reception 33 years ago, we found it had been upgraded to top class international standards. The Cape floral gardens and proximity to Table Mountain with the sounds of the Liesbeck River gurgling past make this a unique and unforgettable experience.

Dear Sharon

Thank you for choosing to return to the Vineyard and remember your wedding 33 years ago. So much changes, yet so much stays the same here. We still have one or two people here that would have been working here when you got married.

Kind regards

When you get into the hotel, you have a claustrophobic feeling as the ceiling is very low and reception area very dark.
They upgraded us to a suite that, at first sight, was pretty and large, but you had to go down one floor from the main one to get there. The doors of the rooms were so thin that you could hear everything that was going on in the next door. The elevator walls were scratched and needed maintenance. The halls were being painted, and the painters hardly left us room to walk by. They passed the vacuum at breakfast time, so your breakfast wasn't enjoyable at all because of the noise, not to mention that the waitresses and waiters were not well groomed and their uniforms were wrinkled and untidy.
It took us 25-30 minutes to get to downtown when there was no traffic.
The only thing I'd recommend would be the Square Restaurant (the only one opened on the 2 days we stayed at the hotel). Also, it would be unfair of me not to mention that the gardens were very beautiful.
Stay somewhere else, it is too far from all the main attractions of Cape Town.

We appreciate the time taken for reviewing our hotel. I have addressed your comments with our painters noting that they need to be more considerate when carrying out maintenance in the hotel.

I am sorry that you did not enjoy our hotel, but glad that you had time to experience the gardens.

The Vineyard has been a home from home for my wife and me on more than 30 visits. It seems to have found the right balance between being luxurious yet without seeming to want to impress. The staff are consistently courteous and the welcome they extend is warm and sincere, while the setting of the hotel in a quiet garden with shady areas where one can read a book peacefully or meander by the stream-side or even just soak up the gorgeous views of the mountains adds a lot to the hotel.

When I add its good location close to the excellent shopping at Cavendish Square and the bonus of reasonable, value for money room rates I think that this is probably my favorite hotel in all the world.

Room Tip: The mountain view rooms are worth the extra cost!

This was our third stay at the Vineyard - and we found it just as lovely as ever. There's something really warm, welcoming and intimate about this hotel. Sitting on the delightfully tranquil garden terrace sipping a glass of fizz in the sunshine and looking out across the gardens on to Table Mountain - it's really hard to beat it!

We stayed in a junior garden suite and found the standard of accommodation to be as good as before. We loved the spaciousness of our suite and having the lounge area made it great for room service dinners. Disappointingly, the trees had grown up so much since we last stayed three years ago, we had more of a tree view than a garden view from our terrace. This also limited the amount of sun we got on the terrace.

We sampled breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner at the hotel at various times during our stay. Breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas (all eaten on the gorgeous terrace) were always top notch in terms of quality of the food. We were not so impressed with dinner in the Square restaurant where we found the portions to be far too huge for us and therefore a bit offputting. However, we enjoyed dinner in Myoga much more.

We spent a couple of days by the pool and really enjoyed relaxing in the sunshine in the peace and quiet (there were very few children around when we were there!). The pool area is beautiful and there is plenty of room and plenty of shade options.

So why have I used the description "idiosyncratic"? Well, whilst this hotel is a bit of an institution and clearly has a big fan base (including us), the staff working in it are variable. Some are great and obviously want to do their best but others give a poor service and don't really seem to care. Breakfast could be very disorganised which kept us amused but was sometimes irritating. We found the receptionists and pool area staff to be equally variable. We wonder why the best staff members aren't held up as role models for others - because if it was so obvious to us which ones are good, it surely must be obvious to the management.

Having said that, we will definitely go back - there is something so charming and irrisistible about the Vineyard that we're prepared to forgive its little foibles!

Dear Natasha

Thank you so much for your honest review. Thank you also for your suggestion on using role models or making champions of those providing excellent service. We are now working on the implementation of such a program. I trust that on your next visit you will see the results.

Kind regards

This exceptionally good hotel, excellently located in Cape Town, close to the Kirstenbosch Botanical gardens, offers great service and a relaxing stay. Breakfast is very good, the swimming pool is nice, with enough beds for everyone. The views on Table Mountain are great. When staying in The Vineyard, do not forget to have dinner in Myoga, one of the best restaurants in Cape Town. Nice to have a short walk in the garden surrounding the hotel. Staff is excellent and hotel management promoted us to a better room since we were on our honeymoon. We also got a bottle of champaign and a little present. Very thoughtful and nice.

We loved our stay in this hotel, the views from the mountain view room was amazing, room was very comfortable and clean. The grounds are outstanding with the tortoises wandering around and the river walk, superb. Staff were friendly and helpful. The photos do not do it justice. Would definitely recommend this hotel before a flight home.
