Description: Papa’s Real Food in Duncan Yard, Hatfield has always been different and very special. The eclectic architecture and design in our outside Piazza area will make you feel as if you are in a different world. Relax under the trees whilst enjoying a delicious meal and drinks, or experience the ambience at the more formal Songbird indoor restaurant. Papa’s Real Pub serves amazing value-for-money meals in a very unique setting. Enjoy laid-back Blues music on Thursday evenings and Sunday lunchtime.

We had three meals here during a recent extended stay in Pretoria and were happy with all of them.

One meal was informal (a burger and a steak) in the small adjacent pub (same kitchen, same menu), which was oddly deserted even on a Friday night with a big World Cup match showing. The other two were both in the main restaurant (indoors, as it was winter), a big hearty breakfast for two and a group dinner near the fireplace. Service in the main restaurant was excellent, as were all of the meals. A bit pricier than the chain restaurants nearby on Burnett, but better quality and atmosphere to go along with it.

A real gem and definitely our new hanging out place in our new country and city! We loved the outdoor seating and special blanket provided on a cool early winter evening.

We went late friday night. A good menu of various mediterranean style foods. I ordered the Calzone which was tasty and had plenty of foods. The mojitos are rather good too.

We have been for lunch and we all enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere in the shade. I liked especially the decor in the restaurant ... just a bit different to everything else which makes a difference. Food was nice, more or less the usual South African menu with a few meals up the "Mediterranean Road" which I really enjoyed. Service is friendly and efficient. One of us had a bit bad luck with a meal but it was no question for the waiter to change it when we brought it to his attention. Overall a nice experience and I would like to try it out in the evening too.

As you walk the entwined lanes of the Duncan Yard, you do get a rustic artistic impression and Papa's continues in that same mode.

Seating - both indoor and outdoor.
Outside - very rustic with interesting art pieces on the walls and a unique water feature. The tables are rather close, so would not say this is for a romantic intimate setting especially during the day.
Service - rather slow but you really don't go there if you are in a hurry to eat; this is not a fast food outlet - possibly if you just want coffee and cake; the waiter was very pleasant, smiling and had a brilliant sense of humor too!
Food - excellent value and delicious. Servings are not large but adequate. The fried fish was superbly done (you can have it grilled as well) -it was light and crispy on the outside and soft flakes on the inside! Their chips were not traditional chips but more like home-fries sliced with skins which were tasty and well seasoned served with a small side salad and a lemon wedge. The stuffed chicken with pepperdews was delectable served with a choice of starch - both dishes had appropriate smooth traditional sauces.
A good selection of beverages - hot/cold and alcoholic/non-alcoholic.

This is a very casual but arty place where the atmosphere is relaxing - and all in all a very pleasant restaurant!
