cheap room, but not over clean. management claim they clean the room daily, but they dont. TV only receives 4 channels, none of any interest. kitchen not very clean, i wouldnt recomend cooking your own food in here. wifi works , but not all the time. i reported to management that there was a fault with their box, but they appear to have the attitude that by turning it on and off it will work properly. it was never looked at while i stayed.

I stayed in africa for a month and this was my first night in africa,
ive never stayed in a hostel in my life let alone in africa,

suprisingly it wasnt that bad, im not stuck up but i wasnt too sure what to expect.
i shared a room with 2 other girls, we had our own bathroom between 3 of us and the room was nice enough, a bit hot though!

i had a very good nights sleep and also had breakfast in the morning, which there was a choice.
i just had toast and marmalade,
the lady behind the counter was very nice and helpful, although there was a guy who works there trying to sell me a trip around pretoria, took me a few no thankyous to get rid of him lol. but harmless enough i think.

i stayed there again.... this was 2 weeks later, i got put in a room by myself, with a double bed, although i still had to share a bathroom with what seemed like the rest of the building, as i waited an hour for a shower people in & out n in & out.
but the room was clean, tidy, didnt smell, no funky stains, and i had a good nights sleep.
i think i payed R300 for a room, first time round when i shared i think it was only R150
So im abit unsure of the whole price thing.
i did also book a lift to the train station with a differen guy who works there, mike he is really nice!
and i think it was only R15
the train from pretoria to johnansburg was easier enough too and i felt 100% safe although it was about R50

Hope this helps some people? xxx

I stayed here for a couple of weeks during my internship but I did not like it here.
It's very expensive and I did not get my money's worth. The place is not very clean, the rooms are very small, some depressingly small (in one room they make a bedroom of something that's hardly big enough to fit a toilet, with hardly any windows) and the whole thing is very inpersonal so I mostly prefered to just stay in my room. The staff is not very friendly and breakfast is never on time. When you ask for breakfast that should have been there by then they roll their eyes.
Their website promised meals at night but hat never happened, the promised swimming pool did not exist either. The kitchen is too small to be a communal one and there is not enough decent cooking equipment available (broken pans etc). Food was also regulary stolen from the communal fridge, very ennoying.
Maybe it's "ok" for one night (if you feel like overspending) or so but I would never recommend this to other interns or longtermers.

I wanted to book a room upfront by a direct mail to the hostel. They said only the most expensive room is available, while on different booking sites all rooms are still free. So don't get ripped off and book another hostel.

I stay at this backpacker regularly because 1) It is in a GREAT location, 2) The staff are very helpful and nice, and 3) it is affordable!! The rooms, kitchen, and bathrooms are clean and there is always someone around to ask if you need help or have a questions about anything. I borrowed a towel and was allowed to do my laundry and hang it up (the maid even made sure that it got dry for me!) So sweet. I highly recommend going out on one of their tours with Footprints in Africa-the Kruger trip was awesome!! Thanks Francois

Room Tip: Room 7 is a nice 2 person dorm room or the cottage if you have a group

This place was any travellers nightmare. On the website everything looked really nice + clean, but when we arrived the smell hit us. As we had already payed a heavy deposit and we were tired after a long flight, we decided to go ahead to the cottage we had booked. The smell of dust when we entered the room had us coughing so us girls decided to dust and air the cottage ourselves. We had booked a stay for 4 nights but they would not refund us our deposit which was for half the stay, if we moved. We then met some other travellers and they told us that their food and clothes were being eaten by rats! We then discovered that our cottage was infested with cockroaches in all sizes, so it was difficult to sleep or relax. The fridge and kitchen cupboards had old food which had turned rotten, so we had to clean everything ourselves b4 we could use it. The staff did their best to try to help us but the owner and his mother were ruthless! I wouldn't advise anyone to book at Pretoria backpackers as it's not worth the money or the stress. It spoilt the start of our holiday in SA, but luckily for us everything went well and after leaving PBpackers our holiday was a success and we had a fantastic time in SA.

Stayed here for one night in May. I had booked a 2-bed dorm, but was told when I arrived that the people in that room had extended their stay, and I would have to pay for a double or twin instead (although the hostel seemed quite empty...). I had also booked breakfast included thru my booking, and had to have several conversations with different staff who kept asking us to pay. We werent able to get a key to our room for more than an hour after arriving, despite asking several times, and the hostel didnt have any maps of Pretoria.

Having said all of that, the lady working at the travel desk was extremely helpful. The beds were very comfortable, and the whole place was very clean.
