“Comfortable and Close”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

We just got back having spent a long weekend here with some friends. Gold Crown implies 5 Star accommodation which it is not. It is however very comfortable and has everything you need for a weekend. There was more than enough room in our chalet for 4 adults which had 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Our chalet was fully serviced on a daily basis by friendly Joanna.

Thank goodness for the air conditioner in our lounge / dining area, the temperature reached just over 40 c on Saturday. My only gripe about the accommodation is that the water pressure in the shower is pathetically weak.

We also tried the restaurant which was very well priced and the food we enjoyed was good. It is not a fine dining set up but is more than adequate. We didn't do the pool area as it was a bit green after the storm they had on Thursday.

The birding was pretty good. We saw 32 species from our balcony in the morning. Some of the more localised birds that popped up in sight from our balcony were:Ostrich, Crested Francolin, Helmeted Guineafowl, Southern Yellow Billed Hornbill, Spike Heeled Lark, Arrow Marked Babbler, White Throated Robin, Chestnut Vented Tit Babbler, Chinspot Batis, Magpie Shrike, Grey Headed Bushshrike, Amethyst Sunbird, Red Billed Quelea, Pin Tailed Whydah, Blue Waxbill, African Hoopoe and Golden Breasted Bunting.

The other big plus about Monateng is its proximity. We stay in the West Rand side of Johannesburg. It only took an hour or so to get there.

All in all we had a really great time and will definitely be going back regularly. The high rating is more about the time we had there than the actual facility which I would rate a very acceptable "3".

Not Gold Crown status & very limited walking area basically just around the chalets. Pity that they don't have any hot tubs & spa's in a main facility to relax & enjoy oneself in. The restaurant is not up to standard & needs to put more choices on their menu. A radio would also be nice to have for a bit of background soothing music. However apart from that we really enjoyed ourselves at Monateng as it is close to Johannesburg so driving distance is minimal & the place is enjoyable for the smaller kids as well. So peaceful sitting & watching different species of buck coming right up to your chalet patio. The whole experience I would say is worth it & we have been twice already & are going back again there this month so that says a lot about the place.

Nice, clean and comfortable accommodation with good braai facilities and with lots of amenities for younger people. However, no self drive game viewing is allowed and you have to pay for every game drive organised by the lodge itself. There is very little space for walking and then also only in the vicinity of the chalets and not in the game camp. Not much to do for older people except for reading (I can watch TV at home if I want to!). The staff is friendly and helpful and a number of Nyala and Eland visit the chalets quite frequently to beg for food.

What a hideaway! At the doorsteps of the big cities. Quiet and clean, with animals roaming around the chalets and some saying hello at your doorstep. Chalets clean and rooms spacious.
Yes, the Dstv channels are limited but who want to stay all the time in chalets watching TV?
The swimming pool, bar and restaurant is great. All in all, I can recommended it.

Room Tip: Choose the chalet at brink of bushes. Quiet.

They always say different strokes for different folks...so when reviewing my stay at Monateng I have to admit that, yes there were no pool towels, yes the dstv was limited, yes there is no big five...but hey! For the amount of points you exchange and the value you get, I would give it a thumbs up! Clean, quiet, serene, tranquil...oh and dsid I mention clean? More than some other resorts I have stayed at. I you enjoy peace, nature and cleanliness...this is it! I f you need technology everywhere you go...maybe try somewhere closer to the city.

Room Tip: Zebra 9 & 10 are furhtest away for peace and quiet.

Relaxed and quiet. Chalets are comfortable and spacious. Dstv is very limited, no cartoon network, only the one Disney channel, kyknet, .net, few movie channels and sport channels and there is no ATM onsite so make sure you bring some cash. There are no phones in your chalet so a cellphone is important to have on hand to contact reception.IThe bar and restaurant do take cards, but the kids games and put put, pool cues.....all require cash deposits. The closest ATM is 13km away.
The croc farm visit was interesting amd all round a good trip and the game drive was very enjoyable. Bring binoculars, even if you are just in your chalet. The animals around the chalets are very friendly , you quickly learn their schedule and eagerly await for their afternoon appearance. Swimming pool is esp. nice for small kids, has a large shallow end , trampolines and jungle gyms. Bring activities and toys with for your kids allowing parents time to soak up the nature.
