Protea Hotel Pretoria Hatfield

I travelled to Pretoria on a weekend getaway with my sister.Getting to our destination was difficult even with the my dutiful second pilot and the navigator, as the city has numerous off ramps. Entry unto the hotel street is via 1 way rd.The hotel is not really visible, we got lost as the signage is hidden. The entrance is actually off the road. The picture on The internet is very deceiving because there is no drive through with someone dutifully waiting. What scared us the most were the dishevelled parking assists loitering the very street. Once we managed to locate their parking we breathed a sigh of relief. There we two guards manning the entryway to the parking. Parking could easily hold 60-80 cars. The receptionist was very helpful. Clean nd well decorated. Information on other proteas at hand. Rooms were standard hotel size nd decor. Bathrooms clean. We were thirsty the whole night as there is no bar in the room. The location and rooming fee are not worth the sum, as there were other options that had their own compound with the same sum.
Not sure if I would return even though the outside fiasco is not a true reflection of the interior offerings.

Dear Zodiac0908

Thank you for your feedback posted on TripAdvisor. All feedback is greatly valued and used constructively to improve our service offering to our GUESTS where possible.
Hatfield is one of the safer suburbs in Pretoria, due to continues CCTV monitoring by the Hatfield Community Improvement Initiative as well as constant foot and vehicle patrols by armed guards in the immediate area.
I am sorry to hear that you got lost in Pretoria trying to find our Hotel. Unfortunately due to the City by-Laws we are unable to add any further directional signage in the area to assist our GUESTS in finding our hotel. I am however in discussions with the council to try and have our additional signage approved.
I do hope that we can welcome you back to the Protea Hotel Hatfield in the near future.

Best Regards

Stayed here for business, area busy as in a student area. Safe enough during the day - best in company after dark. Easy access to Fast rail. Best to bok a shuttle or prearranged taxi with trusted body. Hotel very clean and comfortable of high standard and staff who really try to make your visit touble free. Pool is really a plunge pools probably welcome in high season. Nice 1st floor bar and smal terrace. Restaurant not used as plenty of eating places close or good restaurant a block or two away. Breakfast included at a fair rate was good spread for an international clientele. Rooms clean with tea making nice modern bathrooms and furnishings. Noise can be a problem from the street or a square behind that has many bars operating until late - keep window closed or ask for room on quietest side. Staff can arrange trips but you do need to know what to oas they are slow on suggestions.

Room Tip: Away for square.

Pretoria can be a dangerous city and you may prefer simply staying at your hotel in the evening because you won't take the risk of being mugged or worse. Not here. The hotel is smack in the middle of a vibrant area, close to University dorms, with plenty of life during the day and in the evenings. You can walk to fastfood places, bars and even a few better restaurants without hassle, a small shopping mall is right opposite and the Gautrain Pretoria Station just a few minutes drive with the hotel shuttle. For those with cars, there is plenty and safe parking in the hotel building. While some comments have mentioned the impact of the nighlife's noise on their sleep, I have stayed in a room facing the main square and have not been disturbed at all: the sound insulation of the windows worked perfectly well.
Given the reasonable rates, the rooms are spaceous and airy, equipped with quality furniture and the basic amenities you would expect from a Protea property. DSTv in the rooms offers a good selection of movies, entertainment and sport.
Rare for South Africa is a free and relatively fast wifi access throughout the hotel.
While the breakfast is of excellent quality, the lunch buffet is a rather basic and dull affair.
Without exception the staff at the front desk were extremely friendly and helpful: top quality customer service. The same, unfortunately, was not the case for the restaurant staff: more interested in group discussions around the small bar than serving drinks and cleaning tables, they were for three days running clearly bothered every time anybody in the room stood up to go ask them to come and take an order. This, for me, is the only negative element of my overall experience in this very recommendable business hotel.

The Protea Hatfield is a modern, clean business style hotel with bright and functional rooms. The staff was warm and receptive both at the ront desk and in the restaurant. My room was equipped with a comfortable double bed and couch, with a nice bath (shower only - but it's huge). My room fare included breakfast and it was more than ample in selection and quality. The room also comes complete with an excellent in-room coffee/tea service that comes complete with shortbread cookies. Unfortunately, my room was on the even-numbered side, which meant I was obliged to listen to late night - early morning revelry that eminated from a nearby square where college-age young adults gathered to do things college-age young adults are famous for doing. This caused me to lose more than just a little sleep, so while I recommend the hotel, I would insist on an odd-number room (left side of hotel). There are many excelent restaurants and shopping in close proximity to the hotel. The rail system access is also close by. The hotel has a contract transport provider from Tambo in JoBurg that was superb.

Room Tip: Odd number - and travelers accustomed to washcloths should bring their own.

The several good aspects of this hotel are challenged by its many drawbacks. If optimistic, you can see it the other way around; most drawbacks have an upside.

Yes the rooms are tiny but at least they are sparsely furnished so you can still shuffle around the beds, which have clean sheets and duvets even if one of the two singles in my double room was broken. The bathroom is miniscule, but clean. There aren’t many amenities in the room but there is a shopping center right across the road if you want to buy your own tissues or water or un-frayed towels. The noise of the restaurants and bars and hotel corridor does intrude but at least the air conditioner is quiet and curtains keep out the light. Service is painfully slow but so very friendly and pleasant that the annoyance of waiting is alleviated a bit.

Parking is free and plentiful in a very tight parking garage and there is a small plunge pool right next to the bar. Wi-Fi is free which is unusual for South African hotels at this price.

Breakfast was expensive, bad, and in a crowded, hot, low ceilinged corner with dirty cutlery. I can’t think of a good thing to say about that. There are many fast-food restaurants and cafés in the street outside for alternatives. Also nearby is a gym, the Gautrain station and the freeways.

Overall it’s bearable for a short stay but there are better alternatives in the area.

Room Tip: Higher up gets you further from the neighbourhood noise, but means a longer wait in the slow lifts

The hotel is situated among a lot of night clubs and restaurants, close to the main campus of the University of Pretoria. We stayed there on a Saturday night, and there was a lot of activity on the streets, with life performances in the clubs. Although most of the sound was blocked, we could hear some of the music in our room. The rooms were clean with en-suite bathroom with shower. There was AC and flatscreen TV, Hairdryer and kettle in the room. The bar and restaurant was adequate, although a bit pricy. There are plenty of restaurants and fastfood places around. There is safe parking in the basement. It is easy to get onto the main highways from the hotel. In all, it was goid value for money, especcialy if you are into the nightlufe scene.

This feels like a generic, good quality hotel. Newly built with modestly sized rooms, it's in an excellent location if staying to visit friends in the area (inc Pretoria Uni students) as its at the very heart of Hatfield. The centre and square are safe to walk around at night.

Overall, this hotel does exactly as you'd expect it to. We also got a very good rate, so if you're interested in this place, check the price on booking.com before using the Protea website as it seems the rates offered there are by far the most competitive.
