For my birthday party I invited a few friends for dinner at Illyria House. Right from the beginning, it was a dreamlike experience. We were kindly received in a out-of-this world garden with drinks. Afterwards in the magnificent Drawing Room we, as well as the other guests, were treated by one of South Africa's outstanding pianist's to a magic performance, followed by an exquisite dinner.

Everything - the ambiance, the service and the quiet hospitality as well as the gracious presence of our hostess, Marietjie - contributed to a wonderful evening and a lasting, beautiful memory.

Illyria House, a little gem situated in the heart of one of Pretoria's oldest neighbourhoods.

If you are in for top class dining, the real Parisian furniture and old wooden floors not to mention the breath taking veranda leading to a secret garden and Roman baths pool area, every inch of Illyria is truly magnificent and it leaves you experiencing classic Europe right here in South Africa. The service is world class and you'll always have a humble butler and waitress ready to accommodate your need and desire with a smile. Marietjie where did you get all your beautiful silver ware and furniture! Absolutely beautiful!

Planning and coordinating a wedding at Illyria was made easy with these humble helping hands and the setting and entire picture couldn't have been made more breathtaking than it is. I think we leave a newly wed couple with beautiful photos and memories of your phenomenal place, could fool anyone by saying it was somewhere in Europe.

After all the hype and excitement and buzz, a big thank you to each and everyone at Illyria and those who shared in making the day so spectacular.

After reading positive reviews in Tripadvisor and also taking into account the good feedback from our trusted travel agent in Madrid and last but not least, the price.

We were shocked, in the worst sense. We were alone in the hotel (not that we mind being alone, our best stay was also on our own at Birkenhead House) and the manager was not there (maybe that was the reason for the disaster).

We were received by a happy lady in her slippers (!great luxury), the slippers stayed on all through our stay (thankfully only one night).

The room: big, cold (only one independet radiator we had to move from the "study" to the room, nice and big spyder met doing so), huge bathroom, cold. The furniture: antiques but overdone, the bed: old. TV? Our stay was during the World Cup and we wanted to watch the quarter finals, a 14" screen with bad reception in or room, sitting in antique and uncomfortable chairs is all we got

We were asked to order lunch at our arrival (funy to see the same desserts with different prices at the lunch and dinner menus). Of our first order 2 out of 3 dishes were not available.

Lunch was served outside one and half hours after being ordered (by the lady in the slippers). No drinks until the main course arrived. I am not going to comment further on the food, disaster!! of course overpriced.

We had arranged for the hotel to provide transport to Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg for the football match. We managed to get a 30% discount on the first quoted price. It was a good ride and the chauffeur was nice, but we were forced to listen to zulu radio (he was not capable of tuning an english speaking station)

After all this we got through a cold night and left in a hurry at 7am (no breakfast please!!!).

Upon our return to Spain our travel agent was as shocked as we were, I believe the hotel is no loger on her list. They did try hard.

After 2 weeks on Safari Illyria was true culture shock. It was like stepping back in time. Stepping back to a time of elegance and refinement. From the moment we arrived till the moment we left we were treated like welcome guests. Our Salome suite was beautiful and our balcony overlooked the glorious portico and lawn. The whole house was full of beautiful crystal and silver. Our dinner was perfect. We were surprised by a special piano concert in the music room before dinner. How very special.
I had read about our wonderful hostess Marietjie but was still unprepared by her very special attention. Regrettably we were only here one night but even so felt like family.
I recommend this wonderful home if you want to be treated like royalty and family.

Poor room consisting of two adjacent small rooms with narrow passages in between. One had to close the door of the TV cupboard to go by to the bathroom for instance.
Worse was that the room stank strongly of desinfectant. I could not find the cause or source in the room. It probably came from a storeroom or similar next door where I noticed the next morning evidence of insect damage. Have they been trying to eliminate ants or termites?
The smell was that strong I developed pain in my eyes, throat and got head-ache during the night.
Service at the breakfest and dinner table was by witers with white gloves. But the service it self was poor! Food quality was moderate. When I orderd one glass of wine (my wife does not drink alcohol) they arrived with the winelist. "We do not service wine by the glass"
Slippery and half cooked French fries and the vegatables were brought to the table some 10 minutes before the meat was served. We did not touch them. Icecream and sorbet for dessert were outright rubbish. The sorbet was a mass of lumps of water-ice and the the icecream was full of ice-crystals. Obviously stored at too high a tempurature and/ or very old. At breakfast the butter after having asked for it arrived when we had almost finished our eggs.
One really doesn't need white gloved waiters for that

My husband and I have just returned from a wonderful and exciting trip to your beautiful Country which began with an overnight stay in your exquisite hotel and I felt inspired, a first, to write and tell you how much we enjoyed meeting you and your charming staff. The welcome and, indeed, the 'send off' was quite overwhelming. From the minute we stepped through your magnificent entrance we felt totally at home and very pampered. What a truly beautiful home/hotel you have created! I am in no doubt that you must receive many letters of praise but I couldnt miss this opportunity to congratulate you on your immense skill of being able to put guests so at ease and your ability of passing on your love of illyria. So, thank you! My husband and I voted you, Marietjie, your staff and illyria the highlight of our trip and our 'all time favourite'

We were to arrive in Pretoria at about 1 pm in the afternoon on the Blue Train, however due to several unforeseen circumstances we were arriving late. Our accommodation included dinner but as I said, we were going to be quite late. Imagine our surprise when the Train Manager handed me his mobile phone and Illyira was on the line! So we wouldn't be disappointed, the menu items were read off, so we could choose our dinner and have it ready upon our arrival. And it was. We had the most amazing private dinner out on the patio with lovely music softly playing in the background. The room, service, everything was just lovely. My only regret is that our stay was so short we couldn't appreciate everything Illyira had to offer. We'll have to do it properly next time!
