“Nature calls!”

Rietvlei Nature Reserve
Ranked #3 of 120 things to do in Pretoria

Often people travel long distances to experience nature and wildlife. Rietvlei Nature Reserve is as close as the Mall and an excellent outing for the whole family. For the more active, you can also arrange to do a 2 day walk with ample time to stop and experience the wildlife up close with excellent and ample photo opportunities.

It is the ideal "slow drive" for a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Pack your picnic basket and take the family and relax in nature. You can also combine lunch at the restaurant with visiting the lion camp and get up close with the "king" of the African plains.

For the fishermen there is also ample opportunity to wet those rods and overnight in the basic yet comfortable chalets.

Although there was some incidents regarding security for the people staying overnight security has been beefed up and is much better now.

Do yourself the favour and take the family and just wind down a bit.

If you do not want to walk or drive, take a horse ride and experience nature from a totally different angle.

At R40.00 per adult and R20.00 per child it is a steal and worth a visit at least a couple of times a year.

What a great place to spend a weekend. It's not too far from shops if you need to buy food but still quiet enough to enjoy nature. The self-catering chalets are so cosy and spacious, and have large verandas with a stunning view of the dam. The pricing is not bad and one can also easily enjoy a game drive since it is right there.

Only problem was the service of the staff at the entrance gate, who gave us a very hard time when we requested our breakage deposit back.

Otherwise, it was a pleasant experience overall.

Rietvlei Nature Reserve is Centrally located and well worth a visit.
We spent 3 hours game viewing and had a braai afterwards at Marais Dam.
I would highly recommend this as a weekend outing in Gauteng.

Easily accessed reserve with Rhino and other big game. One does not need days or a 4x4 to enjoy the reserve.
Tranquil scenes at two dams and provided braai areas makes for a good lunch stop or picnic outing.
Bird hides lets you observe birds in comfort and fishing is allowed at allocated areas around the dam.
Overnight accommodation is in the form of chalets or camping.

What a beautiful place to visit. We saw plenty of animals in our drive around the reserve, a rhino, zebra, ostriches and many many more. Sadly the hippos were on the other side of the lake so couldn't see them very well. Got some excellent pics with camera phone but I regret not taking my dslr because would have got some even better pics.
The staff were all very pleasant and answered my questions very easily about the place. Lunch in the coffee shop was also very good for the price. R40 entrance provided a very good day out :)
