“Best Suburban Bird Sanctuary”
Reviewed 23 October 2013

A real tribute to a hero to all bird life of S Africa. Located in the middle of a big housing suburb minutes from Pritoria and yet so full of bird life. We were lucky enough to see Grey Crowned and Blue Crane, besides the and resident Red-knobbed Coot, Fulvous Duck, Egyptian Geese, White-faced Duck, Cape Teal, Southern Pochard,Rock Dove, Laughing Dove and the Dark-capped Bulbul.

“This could be so much better”
Reviewed 20 October 2013

This sanctuary is both hard to find and really not worth the effort. Only a small fraction of the reserve is open to the public and whilst you may see one or two interesting birds, it is all very 'stage managed' and not at all natural. The Blue Crane restaurant is adjacent to the reserve

“Excellent birdhide”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

Austin Roberts has a perfect birdhide for a photographer. It was our first afternoon in SA and therefore all the species we saw there were new to us and we saw and photographed 20-30 different species in 2-3 hours! Including a kingfisher, different herons, storks, weavers, blue crane etc. Considering the location and the position of the hide, it was one of the best hides for making bird photos in SA (and we were in different hides in Kruger, mKuze and iSimangaliso NP).

“Relaxing”
Reviewed 8 September 2013 via mobile

I had breakfast by the lake while cranes were walking just in front of me. Its really nice to see all these birds while drinking a coffee. The service was a bit slow though.

“Saturday lunch at Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary”
Reviewed 19 August 2013

Set on the banks of a pond in Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary the restaurant is well worth a visit. Very good food at reasonable prices. Enjoy a meal while gazing at bird life.
