“Convenient”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2014

I have used this hotel a lot on business.

The hotel is not to far from the Guatrain and it is considerably cheaper than other hotels around the area (eg the Raddison).

Check in is seemless- the staff are very friendly.

The rooms are clean and comfortable.

What I like about the hotel is the short distance one has to walk to be in Sandton Square - where Id recommend you eat rather than the dingy hotel Irish bar.

The hotel has a pool although you cant swim in it in winter!

All in all a convenient hotel - not spectacular - but comfortable.

We booked this hotel via tripadvisor and Cancelon, not having heard of Cancelon before I was a little uncertain but it all worked well and I got a stay at about half price.

This is one of the Tsogo Sun Group hotels we have used this Group before. First I need to say that although the Hotel is well known it is not well signed when approaching by car. You need to know it is on the corner of Maude Street and West Street. There is an underground car park for a daily charge of 40 Rand. In the underground car park there is also a large supermarket where you can conveniently by water and snacks.

The GOOD the BAD and the AVERAGE

The room was a good standard reasonable size seemingly recently refurbished, the bed was comfortable and the linen clean and fresh and changed regularly with a comfy quilt. There is a decent sized safe rather than the minuscule ones often seen it will take a 13in computer. The air con/ heating is efficient and there is an opening window. There was no bath but a truly wonderful rain shower - the best I have had in a hotel - with plentiful hot water and a hand held shower head also. Storage space is limited and the sink top is a design feature which means the sloping corner cannot be used. The toiletries were hotel brand with an unattractive scent - rather like simple soap. They were recharged regularly however. The towels were small and only one face/hand towel was supplied I guess one could ask for more but normally four towels are supplied in most hotels of this standard.

Elsewhere, there is a fitness room, small but well equipped and an outside swimming pool which is the size of a large bath not really usable for swimming. Breakfast is an excellent buffet with full cooked meal available.

On the down side we found the reception staff brusk and not very welcoming, a point which has been noted elsewhere. And the wifi system is very inconvenient, with an allowance of 350MB daily and needing to be logged in several times a day - ironically called "Always On' (lol) . If you are a loyalty card member you can get 1GB allowance but, it seems, you have to have made your booking through the loyalty system. I joined the loyalty system but was point blank (and bruskly) refused an upgrade. This was very annoying and would make me think twice about coming back here again.

There are lots of hotels in the central Sandton area and if the price advantage was not so great I would go elsewhere.

Room Tip: Higher the better

I have received excellent service as always. It is not the first time i stayed in the Garden Court in Sandton. Thank you for your hospitality. The breakfast is awesome, fresh and delicious. i also love where the hotel is situated, right next to Sandton square, where i can do shopping.

Like any of the other Tsogo Sun Hotels, the Garden Court Sandton Sun, is worth a visit. As we normally stay at the Sandton Sun Hotel, the Garden Court Hotel is a much less expensive and a bit more “child friendly” version of this hotel group.

The Hotel is within walking distance from the Gautrain (only operating until 20:30 from O.R. Tambo) and within walking distance from Sandton City, Nelson Mandela Square and the Sandton Convention Centre.

We traveled by car and found the parking (basement and with plenty security), sufficient and were charged R10 per night per car, which is very cheap for secure parking.

We were welcomed at the hotel by Scelo and Natasha, who also made sure that we had rooms in a “quiet” part of the hotel, away from lifts and at the end of the corridors. Check-in and Check-out were done in minutes and they introduced the hotel with all its amenities to us. There is a lovely pool (for summer) and beautiful gardens.

The rooms were very spacious and clean. The hotel is modern and informal. We had a “double-double” bedroom and liked the separate showers, baths, air-conditioning and plug points. Remember that it is always a good idea to take extra plugs and adaptors when travelling.

The boys made use of the fitness room at the Garden Court and enjoyed the variety of equipment.

After exploring the “Days of the Dinosaur” exhibition at the Sandton Convention Centre, we went for some shopping at Sandton City – all of this in a safe environment, with lots of security and no dark alleys.

We went to the San Deck at the roof top of the Sandton Sun Hotel (very close to the Garden Court Hotel) as they offers a breath-taking view over Sandton to have some soft drinks while witnessing a beautiful sunset while they provided a life saxophone player and open bon fires to set a romantic atmosphere.

Dinner: We had dinner at the Sandton City food court and I can recommend the Raj take away restaurant at the food court for mouth-watering curry.

Breakfast at the Garden Court was a treat. The food was great and the selection even better. We loved it and the service was perfect. The staff are well trained, friendly and excited to do their jobs. We spoke to the elderly lady who made the omelettes and enjoyed seeing Sandton through her eyes.

We traveled as a group of 10 people (two families including three children under 10 years and 2 students) and occupied three rooms. We paid R1 410.49 (tax and tourism levy included) for a double-double bedroom (breakfast included) sleeping 4 people (2 adults and 2 children under 18) per room.

We will most definitely stay here again as bookings can be made on the Tsogo Sun webpage and the hotel also replies to e-mails etc.

I have found that it is always a good idea to confirm a booking a few days before arrival in any of the hotels in South Africa and to make sure that the Hotel makes a note if you will arrive after 18:00. It is also advisable to print out your proof of payment (or any other correspondence) and have it with you when you check in at a hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms at the end of the corridor.

My car was stollen in the car parking and the hotel never assisted to get my car back.
If the Management knows that the parking is not safe would be important to inform the guests about the risk so the guest can decide to find a safe place to park the car.
I was expecting more involviment from the hotel management to assist me.
Its was surprise for me to know that the parking security never reported the incident to the hotel management, the Duty Manager only new about that when I came back from the Police and informed him.

I arrived at the hotel, was not busy picked up 2 clients of ours from OR Tambo International Airport. Porters no problem all went well except reception standing with my clients to check, booked 3 single rooms the voucher stated 3 single rooms with 3 reservation numbers. 2 rooms were only found it to a long time to sort out until I got my. I was asked for my name...not to be found on the system...only the clients names. Called the agency in Cape Town reconfirmed the booking, it was prior to arrival even confirmed by the reservations supervisor in writing...3single rooms. It's not the first time at Southern Sun. Sorry to say that! I got a room in the end. Well done!
As mentioned the hotel is nice, the furnishing, porters. Reception staff I refer to as polite but direct, being German myself I know it as better word to say and sounds more professional!
