We stayed at this hotel on three separate occasions for a total of four nights whilst visiting Southern Africa. The rooms varied in size but all were satisfactory for what we wanted which was to recuperate, repack our luggage, and prepare for the next phase of our holiday. The room on 6th Floor facing the pool deck was the smallest and open to passers by.The hotel is ideal for this purpose being about 35 mins to OT airport depending on traffic and in the same complex as an extensive shopping and restaurant complex.

Sandton is the new CBD of Johannesburg and is ideal for short stays when all you want is a meal and rest. Johannesburg is not exactly the place where a tourist uses the local bus system to explore the city and Sandton has all life's necessities.Certainly get out and see the city such as a Soweto tour and visit many interesting places best with a local guide who can show you all the interesting places.

The hotel entrance is on a different level to reception and other than a lobby bar there is little else at that level.Breakfast which is excellent is served in a restaurant on the level between the entrance and reception.

Reception was friendly and helpful, wifi was good and housekeeping was as good as you would want. TV was in a good place and good range of stations . Bathroom was good with secret shower and toilet with a bath placed at the edge of the bedroom. It always puzzles us as to why hotels insist on a bath as well as a shower but in the bedroom?

The only reason for vg rather than excellent was twofold
- porters and concierge were a bit too in your face with greetings, how was your day and multiple
bag handlings, all of which we figured is policy plus a desire for tips
- after 9.00 the lobby bar seemed to have a number of young single attractive women with
presumable intent, not that it bothered us but not a good look
- mini bar which we discovered was complimentary had a limited range and no alcohol which we
would have been happy to pay for.

Can recommend.

Good restaurants in Nelson Mandela Square particularly the Thai one but give The Butcher a miss- too self important and pretentious for what is just a mass produced product

Dear James S,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write such an extensive report for us on TripAdvisor.

I am very glad to hear that you had such a wonderful stay with us on all three occasions. The reason for the differences between the rooms you received was because for two of the three stays, you received complimentary upgrades. In some of our upgraded rooms, we stock our mini bars with certain complimentary mini bar items, however full mini bars inclusive of alcohol, is stocked on request. I have made a note on your profile so you will receive a stocked mini bar for all future stays.

Thank you again for your valued feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back to the DAVINCI in the near future.

Kind regards,

I've stayed at this property on three separate occasions, and have had positive experiences all three times.

On arrival a bell-hop is there to greet you and help you with luggage up to the lobby. Check in has always been friendly and swift.

Rooms are lovely at this hotel, they have more of a boutique style feel, and are decorated beautifully. Rooms have always been clean, and well appointed, with nice tubs for soaking after a long flight, and comfortable beds and pillows. Amenities, robes and slippers are provided. I've always found rooms to be quiet as well.

Room service has always been great. As a vegetarian though, there aren't many options. We tried the pool restaurant once, and food was just ok. Breakfast is included and has ample options of hot and cold.

Staff is very friendly in all departments, and at one point when our future travel plans needed to ben change, they were instrumental in helping us contact our travel provider in the States and getting our situation figured out.

Location is great. It is attached to shopping and within close distance to other restaurants. It is about 30-40 mins from the airport depending on traffic.

I would definitely recommend staying here!

Room Tip: Stayed in a corner room once, it was a bit more spacious. Rooms overlooking pool/restaurant may expe...

Loved the hotel - rooms are a little small but very well laid out. Very convenient to the Mall and you never have to get out at all. Had dinner/drinks at Maximillien Restaurant and it was outstanding - good food and service. The Manager/Food & Beverage, Warren Harvey, is a blast of a person and so made our whole evening with his great humor and attention to our every need. It was a real surprise and treat to find a great restaurant in a hotel - a real jewel.

I was there for a business visit/training. The rooms are large and spacious will all the necessary amenities. The beds were very comfortable and enjoyed the general cleanliness and decor. The also have sockets for international travelers! Very handy. The staff were very courteous and helpful. The have airport shuttles available too.
The hotel is conjoined to a large shopping mall and makes life very easy for going shopping without actually leaving the building. Lots of coffee shops and restaurants around the area.
The hotel restaurant is also excellent and thoroughly enjoyed the menu.

I've stayed at DaVinci before several times, and the sleep quality and shower/bath etc are beyond question.

However, considering I'd say that this is primarily a business hotel, one plug socket available per room is poor, and in my room that did not work. I asked the front desk if they could send someone to have a look, was asked if the socket was switched on, and nobody came to fix it. I was also annoyed that one of the lifts didn't seem to be working, and that this lift was often the one waiting whenever I was in the reception area.

Given what it costs to stay in a hotel such as this, this is unacceptable, and I'll consider looking elsewhere next time I'm in Joburg.

Dear TheRunawayFound,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write a report for us on TripAdvisor.

Please accept my apologies for the inconveniences you experienced during your last stay with us. The lifts leading down to the ground level were undergoing routine maintenance which unfortunately does cause inconvenience however this is solved. The issues with the plug sockets will be addressed with the relevant Heads of Departments and corrective action will be taken. Once again, thank you for your feedback and we trust that you will give us the opportunity to improve your service experience the next time that you are in Johannesburg.

We stayed for four nights at the Da Vinci. It's biggest plus is that it is attached to the Sandton Shopping Centre, the best mall in Jo'burg. Incidentally, Sandton is the safest locality in Johannesburg, a city noted for its petty crime.
The other plus is that their room service is prompt, and the Concierge was very helpful in organsing taxis, etc.
The minus side is that the hotel needs to be refurbished, nothing major just small R&M that a 5 star hotel must undertake on a timely basis.
We had a comfortable stay there, and I would recommend the Da Vinci to anyone looking for retail therapy in Johannesburg.
