Based on Tripadvisor reviews, I settled on this hotel for my one night stay in Johannesburg. Overall, I am pleased with my choice. The Gautrain is a fast, safe and economical mode of transportation from the airport. As of late August, Sandton (where this hotel is located) is the last stop. The hotel is only about a 5 minute walk from the train station.

The area is a nice, buzzing metropolis. Nelson Mandela Square (upscale mall) is a short walk away and beside the train station. There is another mall actually attached to the hotel along with several dining options. The rooms are a nice size. It is a combination hotel/motel with some rooms on the interior and some rooms that face an open hallway. Check in and check out was easy. Free internet would have been nice. I really have no complaints about the hotel. It has seen better days and could use some new carpet and paint but for the price (~$160US/night for me) I could not complain, especially knowing the rates of nearby hotels.

This hotel has traditional decor, but the rooms are nice, the staff are helpful, and the garden area is really lovely for breakfast. Getting into and out of the shopping centre that the hotel is attached to is trickier than you would think - the place is a maze!

Flew in to Johannesburg in the evening and was out the next day., but a great way to deal with jetlag. Our family room with 2 bedrooms, lounge and bathroom worked well to deal with all being awake from 2-4am. Large, comfortable beds, and a ridiculously large desk in living area would suit serious business type. Our breakfast for 20 in the restaurant was a great buffet with friendly attentive staff. I would definitely recommend it and stay there again.

Stopped in Johannesburg on the way to Botswana and then to the Garden Route. Only had one full day there (2 nights) and that was probably enough in J'burg for us.
This hotel was a good choice (thanks Trip Advisor) ... just a short walk to Mandela Square and a massive shopping precinct.
We did a Soweto tour in the morning - that is a must but ensure you run with somebody recommended as a knowledgeable guide (which we did have) is a must.

Let's get the bad out of the way first. An old TV set with very snowy reception, a wake-up call button on my telephone that did not work and a ten-minute wait for hot water in the shower! But, this was not nearly enough for me to complain as I so enjoyed the hotel! Lovely rooms, super comfortable bed and good desk facilities in the room made my stay. A separate shower was great (once the water flowed). Lovely grounds and super lobby area only a 5 -minute safe walk to the mega Sandton City shopping mecca. The location is excellent and the lovely character and old-world charm (yet pretty good room and service standards throughout) make this a winner in the area. Filled with nondescript business hotels, Sandton's Balalaika is a breath of fresh air. It is homely and personable. It might need some small tender, loving care touches, but it's one hotel I want to return to!

Enjoyed a two night stay here when visiting customers in Jo'Burg. A nice hotel with well appointed large rooms, friendly staff, a good bar, restaurant and general ambience.

The hotel facilities are pretty good, they will even arrange a private car to drive you to/from the airport or to meetings. The vicinity of the hotel is quite central requiring a 5 minute short walk to the central 'piazza' type place where there are many restaurants and bars. With regards to security, there are plenty of guards around at night, in fact during the time I was there they tended to congregate by the roadside near the hotel..

To be fair there is not a single negative comment I can make about this hotel, for the price it was very good indeed. I would definately stay again if visiting the area.

We stayed two nights in the Protea Balalaika when we first arrived in South Africa. We travelled from the airport on the Gautrain and walked the 10 mins to the hotel. As noted in other reviews the Balalaika hotel is quite extensive, with quite a walk to the rooms but through pleasant gardens in the interior courtyards in the hotel. The room was fine, the breakfast fine and the rate through Booking.com was excellent value. On the two evenings we had some ncie steaks in the Bull Run restaurant in the hotel. The second evening we ate at the restaurant in the shopping centre beside the hotel, this was French themed with largely Italian style food, a popular combination in Sandton!
