“No standard when it comes to housekeeping”
Reviewed 8 May 2013

Arrived here late Monday night to find wrappers under the luxury slipper bath, clearly cleaning was not very thorough the day before.

Day 2 and Day 3, my breakfast room service (my yoghurt) from the Day 2's breakfast is still in my room - charming, outside the fridge. My dinner from Day 2, take away pizza and salad is still in my room.

Day 2 and 3, no cookies or water bottle replaced in my room.

Clearly quality of service is not what I'd recommend this place for.

we stayed at the bush lodge, was very nice, very clean, spacious, private, rooms were very nice, was truly a bush experience, but 4 star, maybe... I can only imagine what the river lodges might have been lie and that was rated 3 star... the little zoo that Emerald ahs is quite nice. The aquadome to me was dissappoiting... its more for kids and toddlers, so as an adult dont expect too much. The casino is small, the restaurants were nice and there are some fast food options,
cant really see the Vaal dam which we thought we could from the lodges...
There is a really nice pub on the back entrance of the resort which is on the vaal, where we spent the afternoon having drinks there, around 3 to 5km from the resort. All in all it was pretty decent,

Room Tip: definitely chose the bush lodges over the river lodges if you want more upmarket.

Lovely setting.
Chalets(especially the bathrooms) very old and delapidated
Linen and towels clean.
Excellent choice for a family break.
We spend 5 days and had enough to kept us busy all the time.
We used our boat for 3 great trips on the river.
The cleaning staff very unfriendly and rude when they want to collect linen - no concideration if you are still in bed or busy - need to be addressed. Did not ruin or time but a nuisance.

A very quick 45 minute drive from Johannesburg which is great. We originally booked to go to the Riverside Resort (self-catering) but on arrival did not feel the accommodation was 3 star - chalets look very "tired". Also we were never advised that the Resort is some distance away from the hotel and if one has small children or elderly folk it is simply impossible to walk the distance. As a result we upgraded (at a considerable cost - which we had not expected) to a family room at the hotel (a problem as we had brought a lot of food with us and had no place to store it). Hotel staff were pleasant and accommodation was comfortable and bathrooms nice. DSTV very limited. The Hotel has beautiful gardens and a nice swimming pool. My daughter enjoyed the Aqudome and we were impressed by the amount of life savers on duty. The animal park is one of the best we have ever seen and we enjoyed the game drive. However, on the flip side, we ate at the Breeze restaurant on the Saturday and our steaks were very tough, bland and really not of a good quality. That night we went to eat dinner at 18,30 only to discover that all the restaurants (including the hotel) were closed. The only two restaurants still open were Breeze and the Casino hotel and BOTH were closed to children. We landed up having a hamburger from room service in the empty restaurant and are still discussing what exactly the very disappointing meat pattie was made from - for a 4 star hotel the food is very basic and served without any flare or additional salad etc. Fortunately the breakfast at the hotel was very nice. I was also very disappointed that the spa was not open on Sunday afternoon or Monday - we had looked forward to spending time there and again for a 4 star hotel we had expected it to be open. As a "family" resort there was absolutely nothing to do in the evening except gamble and of course nothing for the children to do at night. Perhaps the website or brochures should contain more information about this so one can see in advance what to expect. Also would be nice to have the staff give a little more information on arrival about the Resort and what one can do rather than leaving guests to have to find out for themselves.

To end my Prize won above was absolutely awesome to start the 2013 holiday break with my kids. Emerald Casino is quick 45 minutes from Johannesburg and has everything to relax family with a break from school and work. The staff, amenites and service were excellent. We stayed in chalet to enjoy fishing opportunites offered and if you owned a boat the Vaal River was at your disposal. The breakfast at the Hotel was delicious and catered for dietary needs. The safety and security was handled efficiently. A shuttle bus takes you from chalet to Aquadome and games. The Breeze Restaurant was very busy so a little waiting was expected. The food was served very fancy and was delicious. Considering the long weekend it was overcrowded at Aquadome so avoid it if you dont prefer. We went into Aquadome straight after breakfast which was best time to enjoy heated pools before day visitors crowd arrived. Complmentary access to Aquadome, Putt Putt and rockclimbing was a bonus to residents. For night time entertainment there's the Casino for adults and Ten Pin Bowling, computer and coin games for kids and teenagers. The Wimpy catered for mouth watering ice cream treats to enjoy after a day in the sun.

Room Tip: Chalets were spacious and cleaned daily but complain if you have noisy neighbours as we had till ear...

We had the pleasure of staying at Emerald for one night, a Sunday night. In my experience, Sundays are always nice and quite at hotels, and this was no different.

The hotel and shuttle staff is amazingly friendly and always willing to give a helping hand with smiles on their faces ALL THE TIME!

Buffet Breakfast was spectacular, in our experience, hotels normally do not spend at lot of time and resources for buffet breakfast, but this is what sets Emerald apart from the other Hotels. Their Buffet breakfast was really good, a wide variety of food available, from Fruit and Pastries to freshly made poached eggs.

As for the surrounding areas; Emerald Casino is not the best Casino I've been in, tiny, dirty and staff is not very helpful. The Animal Park is highly recommended. Excellent Layout of the zoo and a great way to spend a day with the family. The Animal Park also have game rides available, 1 hour rides at a VERY reasonable price.

I would recommend Emerald to any of my friends.

Room Tip: We had the pleasure to stay in Room 118 - Last Room on the bottom floor, secluded from all the other...

We went to Emerald Resort and Casino for a weekend to celebrate a birthday. At the restaurant Breeze we had to wait more than 20 minutes just to receive a menu. We basically had to beg the staff to take our orders and when they did they were rude and unpleasant. The staff would stand around talking to each other and socializing than to help paying customers. I would discourage anyone from visiting...
