“Stylish Hotel on Reviving Beachfront”
Reviewed 11 July 2014

The Bel Aire is in a converted building of flats designed in the 1950s by the noted Durban architect Reginald Charles Buck, who died earlier this year. The building's modernist facade incorporates mosaics patterned on Zulu bead work, one of the few modern buildings of its time to incorporate traditional African design (and one of the few even now that does it effectively).

If this building were in Miami Beach, it, along with the rest of the beachfront, with its many Art Deco gems, would get a lot more attention and respect that it currently does.

The owners have done a modest renovation but have kept the essentials of the building in place. The rooms are functional, with utilitarian and inexpensive furnishings. The tacky and peeling blue film on the windows for sun control should go and a different solution sought. The rooms themselves need repairing. For instance, the bolt lock on our door did not work because the wooden latch that the bolt goes into has been broken away.

The owners do themselves a disservice by listing this as a a 4* property, because it raises expectations beyond what is currently delivered. The hangars in the closet are of the 2* variety (the hanger detaches form the hook so they cannot be stolen) and the TV channels offered are heavy on sports and the free or least expensive news channels (Chinese government channel - CCTV but no BBC, CNN, or Al Jazeera. The room is clean but basic.

Staff are friendly and helpful. The manager Bradley was particularly helpful in finding out details of surfboard lessons

The free breakfast was in a room in back, rather than the vibey streetside Cafe Jiran, where the action was. With investment this could be a 4* hotel.

The hotel is right across from the Beach, and within walking distance of uShaka Marine World and other beachfront attractions.

Stayed at hotel 13 to 16 June 2014.

The bathroom had a very bad smell.- Also counter tops and hairdryer was very sticky.- We complained to reception desk and cleaning supervisor- Room was sorted out.......We were told that their is a plumbing problem in the building that is being attended to.......Surely u check out cleanliness of room and bathroom before assigning it to a client.......why the bad experience resulting in a bad review......nevertheless Kobus the Porter made up for this with his kind consideration and understanding of our problem. Thanks Kobus for your hospitality. JAY

I stayed here for 5 nights for the Comrades marathon.
I booked a top floor room and thats what I got.Room spacious with a great view of the ocean.
The beds are a bit hard but I got used to that.Breakfast was very good with plenty of choice and
was included in the price.
The evening restaurant provides a decent menu too
The restaurant and the room cleaning staff were very friendly and professional.
The staff on reception had the attitude that if a guest was asking for anything but the room key
they were a nuisance.I got the feeling that they should have some training on how to deal with
people. They didnt smile much
I was promised a South African plug converter would be delivered to my room it never arrived
and I found out they didnt have one.
Apart from the counter staff it was a very enjoyable stay.
I walked up to the Casino and back most evenings with no problems

Nonchalant non existant service and planning. On arrival at 20h20 I was informed that electricity was to be disconected from 2100 to 05h00. Given a torch to walk up to the eigth floor via dark stairwell.Electricity maintenance could have been scheduled for during the daylight hours. Staff had a nonchalant attitude one of take it or leave it. Very dissapointing.

As we were going to Indaba, we booked that hotel on North Beach in Durban.

When we saw the hotel from outside, it looked a bit old.

But actually, we've been nicely surprised: the rooms were very spacious, very clean and with all what you need.

And the best surprise was the breakfast, diversified, and with very helpful waiters.

At the end, we found that all employees were really helpful.
