I travel a lot for work and so when on holidays, like to stay in places that don't have the sterile feel of your usual Hilton/Hyatt.

After reading the reviews of The Benjamin on Trip Advisor, my wife & I decided to stay there for the night. As previously reviewed, the staff were friendly, rooms were nice and breakfast fantastic.

It is located in a great part of town, with plenty of restaurants/bars close by.

If you do decide to stay there, ring the hotel and ask them to organise a pick up from the airport. We didn't, and paid a lot more than we should have.

Steve

Room Tip: Try and get a room away from the street as it is a bit noisy later at night.

I spent two nites at THE BENJAMIN in June, 2012. What a pleasure! It was one of the best experiences I have had at a hotel in YEARS: welcoming staff across the board from the housekeepers to the manager and the desk staff went out of their way to accommodate; bright and airy; fresh flowers including live orchids in the room; healthy/quality breakfast; cozy rooms; good wi-fi connection; and well-priced. Unlike many comparable establishments, it was very clear that this hotel was well-managed. While I stayed as a part of a vacation trip, were I to have a business in Durban and need a space for holding a meeting or retreat, I would consider THE BENJAMIN.

Our family recently stayed at the Benjamin Hotel in Durban's Florida Road, and what a memorable experience! Once you step in the door, you escape the hustle and bustle of the party Street into a little piece of tranquility. We were looked after by the most professional, friendly and accomodating staff I have ever encounted- right from the General Manager, Fiona Koch, down to the ever smiling Porter and Handy Man, Noah. In fact all the staff went out of their way to pamper our every need and desire! Nothing was too much effort. But best of all were the most beautifully presented, stylish Breakfasts, with everything from smoked salmon and cured Meats on the cold buffet to perfectly cooked hot breakfasts and an impressive range of fresh fruit and health drinks. Attention to detail is the name of the game in the Boutique Hotel. Pay them a visit - highly recommended!

Room Tip: Rooms which do not border Florida Road are quieter.

We had a lovely 2 night stay at the Benjamin and enjoyed it thoroughly. The location on Florida Road is great for strolling and eating out. The staff were friendly and helpful and sent us to many good eating and drinking spots. They also helped us line up a private city tour which was perfect for our needs. The breakfast was great. We'd stay again.

I recently stayed at the Benjamin Hotel while on business in Durban. The highlight of the hotel was the customer service. Everyone was extremely friendly and the hotel staff went out of their way to make your stay comfortable. They have free wifi, a small bottle of wine was waiting for me in my room, and they have an open bar in the evenings. The rooms are nice and the patio area is a lovely place to sit. The breakfast was good, though the fresh fruit looked like it was pre-cut the night before and so it looked a little dried out. My only other very minor complaint was that on the second floor I could hear the bass music from the nearby club, which made falling asleep difficult some nights. As is evident by the clubs, the location is a hip spot in Durban where people come to go to some of the most well known restaurants in the city. Because of that, the area is very safe and I felt comfortable walking around in the evening after work. All in all, the Benjamin was a great place to stay and I'd definitely come back.

Nestled along Florida Road Durban is the quaint 40 bedroom hotel, The Benjamin - for me, Home from Home! Dont be deceived from the road. This is a simply elegant - understated boutique hotel, that made me feel sincerely welcomed, comfortable and supported - all aspects of travel, a woman on her own, values. The close and warm relationships between the staff members rubs off on to the guests. Empowered staff come across as friendly, helpful and going the extra mile. Nothing was too much to ask and their response was fast, efficient and cordial. Fiona Koch, the General Manager, leads by example. Her life is dedicated to her guests and her staff follow suite. For a Home from Home experience The Benjamin is the place to be. And it is surrounded by a great variety of eateries, fashion, art, nature and history. For me this is the place to be, for attention to detail, friendship making and long term travel landing - I have loved the intimacy, the interest and the space to be - BARBARA JOHNSON www.leadershipdimensions.co.za

Really great location, especially for younger visitors to Durban, for easy walking access to restaurants and bars all around. I felt fine walking until late because there were so many other people out and about. The unofficial parking guards may tail you a bit, thinking you are going to your car when you walk back to the hotel, but they're just looking for their tips. Service is generally quite friendly and personal. Managers and senior staff were usually around during breakfast and very eager to help. Breakfast itself is wonderful. There is a small, but varied cold buffet selection and a hot menu. The menu is a little underwhelming based on the many breakfast mentions I saw in reviews of the hotel, but the food was very good. The rooms are not too big, and the bathroom is small, but both are functional and comfortable. The bed was just about perfect to me, and I slept well every night. The shower is another attribute that stood out and contributed to the relaxing atmosphere of the room. TV options are a bit limited, but the wifi was consistently strong and reasonably fast. I was able to video Skype with no problems. Despite the active nightlife on Florida Rd, I didn't get much street noise at night. While my room was toward the middle of the hotel and somewhat shielded from the street, the immediate area around the hotel doesn't have as many night spots, so I'd imagine even the rooms closest to the street are fine. All-in-all, it was a wonderful stay. I fueled up in the mornings with a full breakfast, headed out during the day for some sight-seeing and beach time, came back to regroup before walking down the street for a late dinner and drinks, and then retiring to the room for a restful sleep.
