“Ansteys Fun Packers! Beach Treat!”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

I’d just like to say a HUGE THANK YOU!

Having been in hospitality for 10 years myself, both locally and Internationally, everything from Hotels to Game Reserves for Ferrari Resorts, I often find it hard to take a “holiday” a “break” from noticing every fine detail.

I had recently started a job in The Midlands, quite the chilling place this time of year, dropping down -5/-7 on a nightly basis only, and reaching a maximum of 23c.

After much debating, and way too much working, I needed to come down to sort out a few things and decided there was no better place to be then the beach. Having grown up on the bluff in my teen years, I had pre-set my vocabulary and expected to have to run at any moment if someone happened to be following me. I was surprised to find that The Bluff also known as “The Ruff and Tuff” has become a really respectable, beautifully clean, lovely chilled, area. The people are still as ever “chilled” and the main choice of dining is still “slap chips and sarmies” which suites me just fine.

Check in was a breeze, Michelle had called me the same morning to confirm my booking and I assured her, even though I could not EFT I would be there within the hour, and she held our room for us. What an angel. Upon check in, I couldn’t find reception, but a rather tasty looking “surfer dude” helped us find our way (I almost walked into the door during this).

At check in, we discovered that there was a private pool area on property, for those not keen on sand in everything regime, there is a small café on property as well as a bar.

I checked in along with a female friend of mine, I had not seen in months, and we were escorted to our room. We decided on the Double Cabin in the end, and were shown through a lovely green garden setting, that had a permanent beach breeze and smell of sea looming in it. Our cabin had nice handy shelving, and a rather large bed. My only dismay was where the mirror was located in terms of light; I would have found it much easier to have the mirror closer to the door area where one could put on make-up or do hair etc. Also the bed base is quite long which makes for difficult manoeuvre.

Once we had settled in, we decided to waste no more time, and head to the beach. We spent HOURS on the beach, taking photos and playing in the sand like kids. We “stalked” surfers and ate really fatty foods and laughed so hard that I still have partly no voice.

Upon returning, we decided to meet with another friend, who later in the evening let us down. So we decided to meet with another friend, who briefly stopped in at the back packers and had a laugh with us. When we came down through we must admit, we were quite shocked. The pool area, the communal kitchen, the lounge area’s the bar area and the outside seating were packed. Everyone was carrying on one like one big family.

So after our friend left we decided to swoop on one receptionist who seemed like a friendly person. And that’s where our night begun. I have not laughed, loved, and relaxed so much in the last 1year and 6 months as I did with good old Shadryn and he’s accomplice Justin.

In the end between me and my friend, Shadryn and Justin and a blonde lady who kept assuring us, although she hadn’t showered that day and was not groomed, she was over 15  A mistakes Shadryn had earlier made upon check in, and was to this day never to live down. And then we started meeting everyone else staying with us, including that insanely hot foreign surfer we initially met at check in, who we proceeded to nickname “Hey Africa” after Trevor Noah’s joke.

I must just say a HUGE thank you to all the people who made my day and especially night so amazing. They were not aware but the night before I had had my card skimmed at an ATM and so, literally had just had my entire salary, savings and all cash stolen from me. I was actually in such a depressed mood and so upset that I was in a sense “floating on disbelief for most of the day” and these guys made it such a memorable day for the right reasons.

Thank you so much, Anstey’s! You guys are NO.1 in my book, and I will definitely be sending more folks your way (and stopping in myself just to visit Shadryn & Justine of course).

Room Tip: We had a double cabin, Cabin 2 :-)

This place is a gem. Perfect place to have a relaxed time, take it easy, enjoy the beach any time of day, it's literally right across from a big sandy beach with a lush green bluff that stretches all along the right side coast. You can go for long beach walks or rent a bike for a little beach ride. It is a little farther away from town but it is pretty easy and affordable to call a taxi to go into town. Especially if you're backpacking or traveling solo without a car, the owners are incredibly friendly and will help you out with getting to and from the shops. The whole set up of the hostel is really neat too, there's grass and pretty plants, banana trees all throughout the property and it extends back up against the bluff for an ocean view depending on which room you have. Affordable rates, happy smiling staff. Anstey's backpackers is such a sweet place and the vibe is very friendly. Plus, Heidi's cafe is a super cute little cafe with a local vibe and homemade breakfast for such a good deal. It's the after surf spot to grub. The pool with a waterfall is a plus too! I stayed here for a whole month!

I really enjoyed my stay at Ansteys Beach Backpackers. I travel extensively as part of my work, and find most hotels very bland and impersonal. Not only is Ansteys great value, does it have great access to the beach, but the service and facilities are also really good. I have already booked for my next trip to Durbs. Thanks.

Room Tip: Having a shower early morning with the sun rising over the sea is awesome.

I first stayed at Ansteys Beach in 2003....and have been coming back ever since, despite living on the other side of the world! From the moment I first stayed at Ansteys, I was made to feel like part of the Palmboom family, and a local in the surrounding community. I have seen the backpackers grow over the years, always being upgraded and improved! The latest and greatest edition is Heidi cafe...If only that was around in my younger years at Ansteys when I was suffering a hangover! The accommodation is clean and comfortable with lovely, friendly staff. The community is still the same after so many years and the surf continues to pump.
I'll always continue to visit Ansteys, and always recommend Ansteys to fellow travelers. My South African family - The Palmbooms, will continue to receive visits from me over the years.

The beaches on the Bluff are beautiful and great to explore, especially at low tide when you can explore all the rock pools along the way. Ansteys has consistent good surf and is a quick stroll away from the world famous surf break Cave Rock. It is also one of the most popular kitesurfing beaches. For those wanting to learn how to surf, book our very popular "get-up-and-go" surf lessons. The Bluff boasts beautiful protected and unspoilt beaches (lovely warm seawater!) with excellent lifeguards and shopping centres all within walking distance.
