We immediately felt at home at Nomad Back packers in Berea, Durban. They offer more than just accomodation to their guests ie swimming pool, pool tables, laundry, breakfast and dinner, TV, bar, internet facilities etc which makes this so much better than a bed and breakfast type accomodation. The ammenties are nearby with a mall walking distance away and various areas to relax or eat out closeby. i will definately recommend them to all my friends and will be back for sure!

My wife and I had a great time at this hostel. We were here about a week and a half for the world cup. The staff was super friendly and helped us book hostels in other towns and also a safari. The one downside of this place is that its a few kilometers out of town so you have to take either a minibus or taxi into town. The taxis are a little expensive, but the staff told us how to easily take the minibuses into town and it worked out just fine. There's also pleny of shopping/dining within a short distance of the hostel too.

This is a nice hostel, but I have to give it a poor rating for a few reasons:

1) After we booked this hostel via hostelworld.com and PAID our deposit IN FULL, we got an email from the owner several weeks later saying that we now owed them DOUBLE what we had booked the room for due to the world cup. Now, I'm fine with people upping prices due to special events, but these people tried to up the price for the room WEEKS AFTER we'd already made our reservation and paid a deposit!!! They kept trying to tell us that we were "confused" about the price when in fact we were not confused at all. Once we showed them a copy of our original receipt they agreed to only gouge use a little and charged us 1.5 times the original amount instead of 2 times. Very Very unscrupulous indeed. My wife and I were livid. For this reason alone, I would never recommend this hostel to anyone. That kind of behavior goes against everything that backpacking stands for.

2) Most of the rooms are nice, but we were put into a shed. Literally. Not "a room that is like a shed", but a "shed." My wife and I both got very sick as a result of sleeping in this dank shed in the middle of winter with no heating.

Other than that, the hostel is fine. The people who work the front desk are extremely friendly, albeit a bit disorganized.

The owner/manager of this place is very accomodating she tried to get me on a cheap game reserve and although it didnt happen I was happy she had tried.

The dorms are lovely, the beds are made from dark wood and it gives it that African charm, outside is nice with wooden tables and chairs and there is a nice cafe as well.
Kitchen is modern and is always clean and there is free tea and coffee. In another building is a TV room and another kitchen

Only issue is alchol from outside is not allowed to be brought on to the premises but the hostel does not really have a bar just a small drinks bridge with beer, cider some wine ands very small selection of spirits

Location is good, in a good area with good security and near the musgrove shopping centre for all shopping and pizza etc whatever you need

It is quite far away from the beach and CBD and really you need a taxi to both and its not that safe to be walking around at night time
