Africa Regent Guest House
Ranked #40 of 256 Durban B&B and Inns
Reviewed 21 February 2011

We stayed for a week at this B&B and although the owners were away. The person (Errol) looking after the place was really helpful and pleasant. We left as friends.
It has a stunning African theme and the penthouse room which we stayed in was spacious and had aircon. which was really lovely especially in Feb... when it is hot and humid.
We were greeted every morning by Errols smiling face and great sense of humour and he went out of his way to assist us with our every request.
I will definately reccomend this B&B to anyone travelling to Durban.

I choosed the Guest House based on excellent reviews at booking.com and after having spent 4 nights there I agree fully with previous guests opinion. You really feel welcome and the owners Dave and Pam really made you feel at hoom. I did not have my own transport so they arranged with cab pick up at airport upon late arrival on Friday evening and gave me a warm welcome even though arriving after 11pm.
Nice self service bar run on a honesty basis where you just noted your own consumtion.
Good breakfast and good advise on restaurants to visit during night. Since I was in durban mostly for business I appreciated the free Wifi internet.
Will definately recommend it and when I come back to Durban I will most probably try to book here again.

Myself & my partner stayed at the Guest house in the penthouse suite..the room was beautiful and so was the rest of the property. Yes indeed 4 star, but in service and customer relations ZERO star!
We both in our early 20's and was treated like children,Dave barely spoke to us and when i asked to use the phone to call the phone directory(which is free from a landline) he asked if i had a cell phone!! We went out and bought our own alcohol as the small, and silent bar wasn't fully stocked..upon returning to the house with a bag of ice(no fridges in PENTHOUSE SUITE)Daves wife moaned about it dripping on the floor through the house, instead of offering us a ice bucket..
I to work in accommodation and even though we don't have 5 star accommodation people always comeback and most talked about is the atmosphere and FRIENDLY HELPFUL staff.
African Regent Guest house has none of that.Zero atmosphere, the house is so quiet you can here a pin drop, the bar area is "dead", no music & tvs always off.. we always had to swim with the CREEPY CRAWLER", As the pool always had things floating around in it. As for the food..we were never asked how we'd like our eggs and bacon done..they assumed dry, overcooked and half burnt as this is how we always got it.The fact that they don't offer any other meals to buy is a big minus, as even though its near the shops to drive not so to walk.
We asked about a club...Dave couldn't really give us much info, he and his wife mumbled something about a list with clubs...instead of giving us the list so we'd have things to do...as we both not from Durban and don't know the area...we had to call our own cabs, the housekeepers had no personality...the list goes on...
African Regent is definitely a place i'll recommend to my GRANMA...

MORREY, Owner at Africa Regent Guest House, responded to this reviewResponded 19 January 2011

We are not surprised to receive this review. We always interact with our guests to ensure their stay with us is enjoyable, however on very rare occasions we find this extremely difficult to do.

To respond to your comments, we allowed you free use of the house phone to call a national number despite you having your own mobile phones. The housekeepers always try to maintain the rooms as they are found despite sometimes facing challenging situations. We stock a general range of drinks in the bar but cannot cater for all particular brands that a guest may require. The games room which you used and TV/ music system in the bar are for your use and only need to be turned on if wished to use them. We did not think it unreasonable to request you not to drip you ice through the guest house to your room and gave you a bag to cover it. We do not advertise fridge freezers in our rooms. As we were encountering heavy rain and wind during your stay, we had to keep the pool filtering to avoid it contaminating. We are a bed and breakfast and do not advertise any other meals. All breakfasts are cooked to your order. The restaurants are less than 300 metres away, five minutes walk at most. We have no comment to make about the night clubs.
During the daytime when we are away from the guest house attending to other aspects of our business, guests would normally arrange their own transportation. Taxi cards are on the noticeboard. When we are at the guest house we are always available to arrange taxis.

We enjoyed this peaceful B&B and it felt like home. A special thanks to David and Pam for their kindness and nice attention to detail. They both have traveled all over the world (more than anyone we know) and were interesting people to talk to. They also made some good suggestions of restaurants and where to drive outside the city.
We appreciated the large room with the balcony and comfortable bed. When we arrived we gave one of the staff a lot of laundry to clean, the clothes were returned to our room in a record time and in perfect condition.
The guest house is furnished and decorated with strong African art, some bears European influences from the days of colonization. The dining area was spacious and every morning they cook a nice breakfast. The car was always secure inside the gate.
Only a few minutes a way, we walked in the shopping center and ate at two small restaurants. A few kilometers further is the Moses Mabhida Stadium, the impressive 2010 World Cup stadium. Durban was not our favorite city in SA but this guesthouse and the stadium VIP tour made the stay enjoyable.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our 3-night stay at this lovely Guest House. We arrived on a rainy night and were quickly, and warmly greeted by Dave. We stayed in their Penthouse Room, which was spacious and wonderfully appointed. Every morning, we enjoyed Pam's scrumptious English Breakfast and enjoyed discussing sight-seeing options and recommendations with Dave. Both he and Pam are avid travelers, so they new exactly what we were looking for in a day's outing. We highly recommend future travelers to consider staying here...this certainly was one of the highlights of our stay in the Durban area.

David was very helpful with everything from recommending places to visit, booking taxis and providing general advice. The Guest House was close to shops and restaurants. The lounge set aside for guests was very comfortable and there was a well stocked bar operating on an 'honesty' basis.

Dave and Pam were always helpful. We got great tips (attractions and the Portugese restaurant) and maps, so we could find our way around. The room was beautiful and we felt at home. A fresh cooked breakfast in the morning added to the luxurious feeling!
