This hotel was amazing. We didn't know what to expect but for the price of the room with breakfast included it was amazing. The room was beautiful, secure and the staff and the hotel was really spectacular. Recommend to anyone

Booked for a long weekend in Durban and stayed at this quaint, lovely establishment. The rooms are very well appointed and comfortable, large with beautiful stained glass features and high ceilings. The restaurant is fabulous and the food is really great! It is well located, near Florida Rd - which has a great vibe with all the restaurants and bars. The bed linen is white Egyptian cotton and very comfortable. I suggest you choose a room facing the courtyard as opposed to the road, since it can be noisy at times. A pity they ran out of ice and certain wines on Saturday afternoon. Take note that the restaurant is closed for dinner on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

So what do you get when an assistant chef is on duty and you decide to have an important working dinner? Simple: you change into shorts, have a good glass of wine (yes, an unusually interesting selection is available), and eat a well-cooked meal at your pace. Very well cooked vegetables and fries, and a tasty salad (not on the menu, but something the chef made up as we wanted a salad). Cheese requested - no problem. Beautifully presented cheese plate (but with soggy crackers - a Durban problem). Is it five-star food (by Cape standards)? No. Was it a great meal? Yes. No-one rushed us out - staff gladly stayed despite our encouraging them to go home. Tremendous flexibility (Cafe Neo - take note). And - the week long stay was terrific. Sandwiches for lunch requested at the last minute - no problem. Laundry in cold wash and no tumble dryer - no problem. The remains a gem all round.

Room Tip: No - I do not want you asking for my room!

This was such a nice surprise to stay here. We found it through TripAdvisor of course. And loved our stay.

Its style is charming. The existing building has been elegantly transformed into an accommodation establishment. The style and look fit right into the rest of the area of Morningside in Durban.

The service was good. The rooms are stunningly decorated and elegantly laid out. We really loved this place!!! Its highly recommended!!!

Booked in here for a weekend in Durban, and found it to be a gem of a hotel.

Located just outside the city center, this fabulous old building has been meticulously converted to a small luxury boutique hotel. The decor is soft and elegant with soothing shades that are easy on the eye. The bed is the finest luxury mattress dressed in crisp white cotton percale. A classic bathroom in white marble, and frameless glass shower round up the room perfectly. A coffee brewing kit, and freshly made biscotti ensure that the odd hour caffiene urges are well taken care of.

Breakfast is a delight for the senses. Eat in the dining room, or in the garden under the trees. Bright white tablecloths and good quality cutlery hint at whats to come. Breakfast is no mere "eat and move" affair. The resident chef conjures up each plate to order and serves up specials such as eggs benedict (or the smoked salmon version) omelettes, and other awesome breakfasts. Even the muesli tastes specially made!!!

I have to return to try the high tea!!!
(As I was leaving, I caught a glimpse of the sous chef preparing profiteroles from scratch)

I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay (and the food we serve!) so much. And yes, you do need to try out our high tea, the profiteroles are definitely made from scratch as we do with everything in our kitchen.

This is an elegant number – as classy as its name - the St James on Venice. The guesthouse is a grand double storey building with curved balconies all around, glossy wooden floors and attractive finishings. It is well situated in breezy Morningside, Durban.

My room is decorated in soft grey, from the silvery headboard, to the damask-style wallpaper, cushions, blinds and grey suede couch. There are matching brushed silver wall lights. In one corner stands a handsome shaker-style wardrobe, while on the other end of the suite is a couch and desk by the lovely bay window. Around the corner there is a modern, clear glass, spacious shower in an open-plan bathroom, with a separate, enclosed toilet.

Air-conditioning, large flat-screen televisions, a restaurant and active reception make this a convenient business stay. The guesthouse is set amongst established trees, with plenty of secure parking space and 24 hour security.

Accommodation Experience:
For a couch so stylish, it is surprisingly comfortable. I sink gratefully into it and I find I am perfectly placed within a private nook in the bay windows on both sides of this corner of my room, where I wile away the evening. There are happy sounds of staff from the kitchen and reception area, dogs barking across the road, and I enjoy the feeling of being part of it all and yet resting hidden in peace. The restrained but fashionable décor add to the feeling of calm luxury. After a tiring day of work at the end of a busy year, I find this space restorative and inspiring. For a place so elegant, I have an inelegant fleeting image of myself holding onto this couch in the morning, being forcibly removed while begging to be allowed to stay and not have to go back to work.

As in Durban, like in other big south african cities, the issue of security is all around, this hotel is a good choice. Situated in a calm an clean area not too far away from the city center, it is quiet and safe. Disadvantage: no restaurant open for dinner, no one in footwalking distance. Take a taxi if you go for dinner after dark.

Room Tip: Rooms to the garden, not to the street
