The night before last, I dined for the third time at the African Peninsula. In short, the setting matched my expectations, while the meal itself fell just short. Nonetheless, this is probably currently the best restaurant on the Bluff; I can only think of one other dinery that offers white linen.
My favourite part is the pathway from the entrance through the tropical garden and past the pool down to the restaurant. Already the zoom of the ocean hints at what is to come. The waitress opens the door and we walk through the house and onto the deck. Two nights ago, plastic shutters closed the windows, but the sea sound and air were lovely.
My lamb chops looked beautiful but were a bit tough. The African Peninsula salad was enormous, almost intimidating. My companion’s butternut soup was attractive but apparently unexceptional. The service was efficient but indifferent.
In short, go for the beautiful setting and above-average food.
