Bad experience. Whilst you showering u get cold water or its too hot. The door to the balcony on the ocean side did not lock properly. It felt dirt mildew could be seen in the bathroom. Only security left in the evening. It felt like u could meet anytime with a ghost whilst walking in the corridor. The breakfast was pathetic, if u late for breakfast u get gold food.

Once upon a time, this must have been spectacular, and from the front. it still looks the part. Sadly, its time is long gone, and it is badly in need of a revamp to restore its to the hotel it could be. What lifted it from its dingy morass were the staff, who must have been disheartened by the non-stop battle against a tide of niggling problems -- sink plugs that didn't fit and the like -- but never let it show and even managed to get the wifi working -- eventually.
That said, the staffing is strange; there are so many on duty at breakfast it was almost one per guest, but only two during the rest of the day and the bar (which is poorly stocked anyway) closes at 10pm so that the last of the hotel staff can go home, leaving only the night security guard on duty.
Not much around to do, so expect to add the cost of a taxi for food, drink or other entertainment.
Still, for the price we paid, what can you expect? It was fundamentally clean, just a bit dingy, tired and faded.

this might have been a beautiful hotel some 200 years ago, ever since nothing has been done to upgrade this. the rooms are so small, there is not even place for your suitcase, no hair dryers, just really no touches. breakfast is a sad experience. and yes, it is probably haunted! :-)

Where do I begin about this hotel ? When we reached at about 10:30 PM the first shock was when we realized there's no one to carry our luggage to the rooms. We were two families with two small kids & had to carry all the luggage with the kids. The lone receptionist heaved a big sigh of relief after seeing us because she was waiting for us to check in so that she can leave !!! Probably the first hotel I stayed with no one to take care of the guests in the night except the security. The room was a victorian era type with huge doors, windows & curtains covering them giving it a ghostly look. The breakfast had nothing much to offer with everything kept in 100 year old dishes which were falling apart as we touch them. The bar was also not something worth to be mentioned of with few bottles of wine kept in display but nobody to drink them. There is no room service & no one to take care of your needs post evening. We stayed two nights here but they were the most horrifying nights we ever had in a hotel for a long time. Not at all recommended.

This place must be seen, even if you do not stay there. The common rooms are all filled with marquettry and amazing chandeliers exuding the charm of the type of club they would never have let your ancestors in...
The rooms are spacious, the bathrooms have been redone, there is no wifi.
Probably best for people with cars. quite close to "downtown" not there is much to do there, as far as we discovered.
The staff tried hard in their kind simple way. For our one breakfast poor Winnie had to make toast twice as she burnt the first attempt, as if she had never used the toaster before.
I ended up cancelling our second night and they promised to refund half my money: We'll see: I cancelled mostly because of the atmosphere of the city.

Room Tip: ask for one facing the Indian ocean

I spent two weeks at the hotel with two other colleagues in the 3 bedroom apartment. This was a large apartment with lots of common spaces which was important when you are staying somewhere for a long period. However, the building while looking great from the outside is really old and all the furniture was equally old (we named the place after "Casper" the ghost). Previous reviews warned of this matter so I was not too suprised but there was a lack of important thinds such as no room fridges for out food or even a microwave to reheat/cook stuff. Considering the size of the place there was lots of space to place it. The rooms were OK but the electrics in mine were all bad and the air conditioner did not work in the second week (lucky it was cool in Durban). There were no plugs to recharge my computer and equipment so I had to use a common space. The hotel treated us well, we had clean sheets in the rooms but never enought towels. The security was a basic as the life stopped in our common area and we only had a latch to lock it.

The area around the hotel was not safe to walk around after dark and we only ever got back after dark to the hotel. Not convenient with few real shops nearby and lots of homeless in the surrounding streets. The area is mainly used for people when they are passing through using a car etc. You could walk to the surrounding shopping places but again you would be better getting a taxi back.

The food was OK, we had a consistent breakfast each day that was filling and healthy. However, dinner was not well prepared and the food was at times poor quality. Despite all the problems the staff tried hard to ensure we had a good stay. While I would not stay there by choice it was far better than many other nearby places. It was close to the ICC and this was really important for me and my colleagues.

Room Tip: Rooms are all old and need of updating - just accept that it is going to be a bit strange!
