“Family trip”
Reviewed 26 April 2013

It is good to save for the trip starting from 1 month of the year if you are going to travel on December, and it is adviceble to plan ahead and to have the tour guide so that you dont have to be all over the place.

It was the first trip traveling with my children and we were so happy because it was first time travelling together I usually travel with my husband only.

My Husband and myself stayed here for our honeymoon December 2012. We had a room facing the beach with the most amazing sunrise and sunset every day. Thank you to the friendly staff for making our honeymoon extra special. We will surely stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms facing to the beach has an amazing view

I stayed here for two nights while visiting Durban, and booked a Superior room with King sized bed and sea view. Overall my stay was most satisfactory and I found this one of the better 'chain' hotels I have used - although smaller B&B's usually still offer better service and value for money. The Edward is not cheap, but most of the higher-end hotels on the Durban sea front seem to command elevated rates.

The draw of the Edward was the beachfront location and easy access to Durban's attractions. My balcony overlooked the seafront and was a great place to relax and watch the sunrises and people go by. There is a small (rather quaint) fairground in front of the hotel which some people may dislike, but I did not find to be a problem.

Room furnishings and bed linen were of a high standard. The bathroom was a little dated and certainly the bath was in need of replacement since the enamel was badly chipped and not really in an acceptable state for this level of hotel. The room had a wall mounted LCD TV with a good number of DSTV channels but was a little on the small side.

Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, especially the reception staff and the bar man. The food at the buffet dinner was quite average and also rather pricey for South African standards. One would be better off eating elsewhere as there are a few options locally.

Would stay here again.

This hotel was day 7 into our South African tour. We arrived late afternoon about 5pm. Check in was efficient and we got to our rooms quite quickly. We had a room facing the beach but the view was not really endearing as we looked out onto a fair ground. There were local market traders along the front a plenty. We took a walk onto the beach which was full of the locals having great fun! There was not much to see really , and we were advised to stick to the front and not venture to the back of the hotel. Two people had their bags and jewellery snatched because they wondered into the back streets ( not in our group tho). We decided to check out the hotel roof pool which was dirty and had cigarette butts and a lighter floating in it!!
On reflection we decided to eat at the hotel as some of us in our group did not fancy wondering out at night as we did not feel particularly safe.

So our group of 13 all decided we would eat in the restaurant. Well this became a task and a half! We all sat in the bar , but could not seem to find a waitress. So the receptionist tried to help us. We wanted to eat in the Al La Carte restaurant (which was empty by the way!) she tried to persuade us to eat in the Buffett restaurant which none of us wanted to do. To cut a long story short it seemed that the task of organising a table for 13 was near on impossible as she was not sure the chef could cope with 13 orders! Could we sit in groups of 4 instead? Quite how that was easier I do not know. Anyhow we tried to be helpful and we pre ordered at 9 pm in the bar. At 10pm one of our group went to find someone to see what was happening. Basically nothing! Our table had not been sorted and the hotel staff rushed to push and lay our table. Eventually at 10.15 we sat down. Our food came out sporadically and one of our group had nothing as they had only put. 12 orders through despite the receptionist reading back 13 orders to us! No one came to take a drinks order.

Eventually one of our group called through the hotel duty manager and told him in no uncertain terms our frustration and displeasure at such shoddy service. The poor waitress that we had did her very best to keep up but I think she found it all overwhelming.

Basically the hotel had a wedding party in and us and obviously were un prepared and understaffed. One of our group was ill the next day. We complained to our agent Ilios travel and I hope that they will consider using another hotel in their South Africa tour. Luckily we were only there for one night. Probably the worst hotel on this tour

Room Tip: Don't bother! Find another hotel!

We stayed at this hotel for 5 night in Nov 2012.
The hotel itself is on the sea front which means its easy to get to the beach and you have nice views (ish). The view was of the sea (nice) but also of a rundown kids fairground infront of the sea (not so nice). We thought we had paid a good price for the room but when we got inside it was tiny! Luckily we had a very helpful member of staff help us to upgrade.
The new room was large and very lovely. Room service was good, a safe in the room, bathroom clean and large.
The food was pretty average, nothing special. The bar was lovely with a lovely bar man (Manny) who we chatted to regularly. The bar has free snacks in the afternoon which is good!
The area - walking distance to some shops and Ushaka. The beach is not so nice so we walked up to the north beach which was much nicer.

On the hotel website the pool look amazing and large. The reality is, it's very small! Clean and stylish but tiny. We were luckily the only ones there but if it was busier you could only fit about 5 people around the pool!

Overall - a nice hotel in a pretty average area.

Room Tip: Get a big room!

The building and room had some charm, and the views over the beach and ocean are good - although it is right opposite the small amusement park. Food in the restaurant was both disappointing and expensive, and the service was excruciatingly slow. The whole beach front and buildings have clearly seen better days, though. Free wi-fi is a bonus, and parking is good value at just 60 Rand a day. Clean, comfortable, but not a 'grande dame' any longer.

Great location next to the mall. Clean, enormous rooms and good breakfast. Only stayed one night so no time for the pool etc. it sounded like somebody was chopping down a tree outside my room at 5 am though, v noisy! My wake up call didn't come though either, luckily the tree chopping had woken me up!
