“Great location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 January 2014

Located on the Golden mile and is directly across the road from the seaside. During the day you can walk for miles along the promenade and snack or people watch for hours. Hotel has been refurbished with taste. The dining room, with its columns and exotic woods is worth a visit, and the food was excellent.

Stayed here for 1 night whilst in Durban and whilst it did the job needed (bed for the night in Central location would not stay here or indeed Durban again)

Whilst the hotel is indeed central the back entrance of the hotel leads onto a undesirable back street and we were advised not to use this an a means of coming and going.

Whilst stood at the front of the hotel in the morning also had 3-4 people coming up and asking for money.

The room whilst old fashioned was of a good size with a large clean modern bathroom and looking out onto a side street (of which we saw people urinating/drunk/vomiting etc)

The staff were ok with the receptionist, concierge and security guard being very pleasant.

Breakfast was the usual spread with an egg station.

Whilst this hotel was ok for what we needed we would not stay here again.

Simply poor standard in general, this is not more than max a 2 star hotel. Poor service in the resturant, long time to delivery. The picture on the pool area is simply lying. To walk outside was not only by us but likewise from our treveling partners considerd unsafe.

This was clean, comfortable and well-located, and the staff in reception were charming, though the room was really quite small and walking around the end of the bed became a little tiresome. Reception was quipu ire charming, even though they were clearly busy as quite a group came in at the same time as us. We didn't use restaurant so I can't comment. The wifi was very slow.

In all it was unexceptional accommodation, and I would stay again, if just for the friendly reception

Colonial style rather old fashioned hotel situated o sea front. Rooms basic but clean. Went for lunch in the restaurant and service was very slow the time between sitting down and being served a baguette was over an hour but the food was good and reasonably priced. The area around the hotel felt less safe than we had felt in previous hotels and the guide advised us to only venture out in groups.

On my first trip to Durban, the Protea Hotel Edward Durban proved to be the right choice. When I research this hotel, there were questions such as proximity to the beach, airport transportation and restaurants recommendations; well this hotel, in particular Ms. Aphiwa answered me within 24 hours to provide the needed information. Ms. Aphiwa also stayed in contact with me before my visit to ensure that all of my questions and requests were answered. This lady provide top notch service that all Five-***** hotels should mirror. Everyone from the concierge, bell desk, restaurant personnel, room attenders and front desk did a fantastic job. Whenever I wanted to go out, I would call to the bell desk and they would inturn arrange transportation and call me when to come down. This hotel service should be what all top notch hotels strive to provide. Definitely, I made the "Right Choice".
