“English Edwardian hospitality in Durban”

From the time you enter this great majestic old school English hotel to the charming flowing entrance foyers to the most amazing welcome from the friendly staff and reception, we checked in and sat at the local watering hole for a thirst quencher, The Casurie Bar located inside the hotel, and enjoyed Mannie the barman. With our bags ported up to our rooms, we found ourselves in comfortable spacious bedrooms with welcome water and fruit upon arrival, lovely comfortable beds. The pillows need more firmness and the bathroom need an makeover. Morning breakfast was a feast buffet and enjoyed freshly brewed coffee and fruit juices. Well worth a visit. Charming old school English hotel. Stunning views of the ocean and beachfront promenade, a hive of activities for any tourist.

Room Tip: Sea facing rooms offer the early sunrise.

Stayed at the Protea Edward this past weekend on business. The hotel is centrally located with beautiful view of the Durban beach front. Although the interior is slightly dated, the hotel is very clean. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Mahendra - front office manager - is an absolute asset to the hotel! Will most definitely be happy to stay here again!

Room Tip: Ask for a seafacing room! Top floors are better as there is a bit of party noise from the late nigh...

The location of this old hotel is one of the strongest selling points. It is right on the beach front with a fabulous view of the ocean. A few minutes drive from Ushaka and the harbour. The rooms have everything necessary to make for a comfortable stay. The staff are very friendly and helpful. My only criticism relates to the service on arrival where I was left to carry bags for a whole family from the basement to the room without any porters anywhere in sight. The pricing on the food is also a little of the expensive side. On the whole though I would certainly return should I stay in Durban again.

Once again my wife and I went to Durban for a weekend running away from the Gauteng winter. We stated at the Protea Hotel Edward and as usual, we were not disappointed at all. We checked in early all thanks to Mahendra who arranged this for us. I must say Mahendra is an assert to this hotel. If ever you are not happy with anything at this hotel, which is highly unlikely, you can always count on Mahendra.

Thank you Mahendra for everything.

I stayed at the Edward during the eighties when the hotel was one of the grandest in Durban. Decided to go back for nostalgic reasons. The building is well kept but has lost its splendor and charm. The staff was friendly and tried their best. The "curry buffet" at R250.00 was very disappointing and certainly not worth the money. Better cheaper restaurants at nearby hotels. I was also not "allowed" to order room service on a tab to be settled because I did not bank credit. I think there are better hotels in Durban. Wont stay there again.

the barman and restaurant employees were particularly pleasant and whilst the hotel generally ok but worn/tied and the staff tries hard to be helpful, this is not the problem.

this central area of durban is now so violent that guests are recommended by the hotel staff not to walk the streets particularly at night and even during day, not to wear watches, credit cards or cash or sit on the terrace outside the hotel with bags or laptops. to use an atm around the corner, the hotel advices to be accompanied by one of their security guards. visits to local restaurants are suggested only by taxi to and from. locals shun the area and recommend to stay in hotels out of town.

it is impossible to take the risk of staying in a place like this and being unable to even have a walk around the shops, beachfront and neighborhood, we moved out.

We had a very good stay at the Protea Edward. In addition to staying the we had lunch, dinner and breakfast at the hotel.

All of the food was great, service generally was very good, but service a tad tardy at dinner time. The buffet for dinner was quite comprehensive and well prepared.
