I recently stayed for business for the whole week, yes it is not a 3 star but the service is that of 5star hotel real hospitality indeed. I also saw Department of Home Affairs Officials I managed to interview some of them about the hotel and they said to me Tropicana was like their home far away from home. What is lacking in the hotel is gym facilities

Room Tip: Sea facing rooms and also those on your right hand side for example 705 is partly see facing The su...

On a shoestring budget?
The Tropicana is the only venue in Durban where you can get a good plate of food for under R30! Menu changes daily in the 'Clipper's Bar' and has tables both inside and out.
I notice that there are many complaints about this hotel, and yes most are true unfortunately.
However, the Clipper's Pub will always see me when I need a quick lunch or dinner at an excellent price!

I stayed for 2nights after the new year 2013.at breakfast I was apalled by the rude remarks made by waiters on the morning of the 4th, they were vocal bout the age difference of sum couple it was none of their business and that does not do the business good i was absolutely in disgust by that behaviour of workers forgetting where their bread is buttered. For them to jump to such conclusions and throw insults it shows lack of good training in hospitality and it was really barbaric management should correct that.I would really like to visit this hotel in future.

I recently stayed here for a conference in Durban. I wasn't looking for a budget hotel per se. But my per diem had been spent on my air fare since I was flying in from across the globe this time. So I opted to stay at a less expensive hotel. I wasn't expecting this to be a spectacular hotel by any means, but it was really horrible. the staff were friendly but the hotel is in decay, the rooms smell, the towels are stained, the wardrobes smell of mold and get that smell on your clothes. The bathtub is lined with stains and there are cockroaches running around everywhere. The TV to my surprise was a flat screen, but it has about seven channels. There's no mini bar. my only solace is they upgraded me to seaview on request at check-in. I wouldn't recommend it even for those on a budget.

Room Tip: request a seaview, it will make the stay more bearable.

we stayed for only 2 days and was out to drakensberg tour for one day, but the hotel was ok.. location was good and we liked walking around the area in the pleasant evening weather.. there is a tour company outside the hotel which can arrange for airport pick/drop facility also.. breakfast has good options..

Stayed here for three days. Noticed bites on the second day, by the third day my upper back and arms were covered in about 50 blistering bites. Complained at the front desk, and nothing was done. Arrived back in Cape Town and had to get pest control to clean my house as bed bugs had attached themselves to luggage whilst being in the room.

The Tropicana hotel was filthy. By staying at a hotel, you are paying for a service. You are paying for a clean bed to sleep in. To take someone's money, and not provide hygienic conditions is unacceptable, there are legal repercussions for this sort of thing. It is the hotel's duty to ensure that the rooms they give customers are in a good condition.

Most traumatic hotel experience. I have been going for laser for the past two months to remove the marks left by the bed bugs.

Room Tip: Don't stay here.

I stayed in the hotel for 10 days on a business trip as the company had chosen this hotel for us.
The Hotel itself was clean and pretty good, although it was a little old and the facilities was not that much updated (non of our rooms had fridge!). the staff was friendly and polite and very helping. The house keeping was good and the breakfast buffet was lovely and complete, very much what you would expect from a good hotel.
The view was awesome as it was just a few steps from the beach, but the neighborhoods was so unsafe that you could not enjoy the location very much.
As we were on business trip, would spend the most of the day at work and in the evening it was not safe to walk by the sea. Also there were some kind of corporate apartments near the hotel and the residents tend to do chanting at night which could bother you if you are a light sleeper or like to go to sleep very soon. The only positive point about the location (aside from nice view)was that it was few blocks away from Ushaka Marine World which is a very nice aqua park and big aquarium.
Also in the day time there were flea markets just accross the hotel which you could find beautiful African handcrafts at very low price.( of course you should bargain for discount) or you could only walk and enjoy the colourful culture.

The hotel had a bar/Restaurant which served good food, but the area was not very well decorated and it was not as neat as expected.

Generally the hotel itself was good for the price , but if you are expecting to enjoy a holiday by the beach, i do not recommend.
