“mixed feelings....”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 November 2012

The reception staff was nice and staff very willing to assist with the luggage. The internet in the restaurant was "temporarily not available". The wireless internet in the room is just plain too expensive (90 Rand for 2 hrs)... Why free television and not free internet? Breakfast was mediocre. Not wow. Didn't discover the english breakfast before the next day (it's a bit hidden).
The room was fine, though the cockroach found alive and walking (4 cm american cockroach) was plain disgusting. Upon reporting it at the front desk, the receptionist pulled up her nose for disgust as well, but only "informed housekeeping".
Won't stay there again.

Dear Jerry H

I apologise for only reverting at this time, our systems experienced some technical difficulty, however we must apologise for this average experience and assure you that your feedback is valuable and meaningful.

I will however like to advise you that wireless has been upgraded and is now free at 400mb per day, and the hotel is going through a full refurb, should you return a noticeable difference will be experienced.

Kind Regards

Jerod

This hotel is just what the doctor ordered if you are on a business trip or holiday. The staff are all most polite and helpful. In fact there was a mix up about a taxi for me and the receptionist responsible spent the rest of my stay trying to make up for it. The food is excellent too and good value for money. The room was spacious and clean,,,I DID try to get them not to change the towels daily, but was unsuccessful. Altogether I can highly recommend this hotel

I stayed at the hotel over this weekend with my mum and 2 sisters. We got there early in the evening on the Friday and when we did , they gave us our key with no one to assist us with our luggage. Excited about staying at Riverside and going for our Spa treatments, we got to our room only to find that for 4 adults , we had twin beds. We went back to reception to get another room. After fumbling for about half an hour, we were told there were no rooms available and that we would get a room the next day at 11am and that they would put extra beds. The beds arrived over an hour later and in such terrible condition, we were then told there were no extra pillows. The next morning I called reception to enquire about our room only to find that the phone did not work. I went downstairs and was told that they had no idea when the room would be ready because , well there was a power failure and no one even advised guests of anything while we were left in the dark. Eventually when the room was ready, it was about 12.30 and we were off to the spa. The new room was much better than the old room and Alex was incredibly nice about it, helped us with our luggage and gave us an option of two rooms. We went down to the pool and asked for some pool towels but were told there were none and yet we were the only ones at the pool so no idea who used them. The first room, the water stood as the drain was blocked for some reason. Not all staff are helpful - some had a real attitude and the fact that we booked with three cities and had to sleep in a room that was too cramped, not cool. Even though they knew there were 4 people, we did not get extra cups or coffee/tea.The Spa on the other hand was 5 star, we adored it and kept saying we want to go back there. I will recommend everyone to visit the spa. The hotel ? Not so much.

Room Tip: The rooms with the sea view are beautiful

You can see this was once a good hotel but there is now little attention to detail. The cleaning of rooms seems very superficial. Had a broken shower head and a bathtub with dust and someone's hair in it. Complained in the first day and was told maintenance would fix. Came back late in the evening to find the shower had nit been fixed and while everything else had been cleaned the bathtub remained the same - so the complaint was not really sent to anyone. I complained on the second day about the same thing and asked for a different room if they cannot clean the room or fix the bathtub by the end of day. I arrived back late in the evening and found the situation still the same. Staff is friendly but there is an issue with the hotel. This lack of attention to detail is also visible with uncollected plates with half eaten room service food in the corridors. Generally lies there for hours.
Would not recommend the hotel for the prices they charge. Would suggest they pay attention to things the customer expects if they are spending time away from their usual home comfort.

This was once a nice hotel but now the place is dated and the facilities patchy. Staff are friendly and enthusiastic. Service is good enough but several things put me off; when I checked in there were two filthy bed bases abandoned in the corridor, quite disgustingly soiled and torn, which created a bad impression. They were there all afternoon and when I mentioned them to the receptionist she grimaced and reached for the phone but they were still there the next morning, along with an abandoned room service trolley with dirty dishes, smelly cold curry and empty bottles, which also stayed until the morning. The restaurant is dull and dated, the tables have sticky vinyl covers, the seats are sweaty vinyl and the menus printed on some kind of plastic, which indicated to me that the menu never changes. The evening meal was a small portion of warmed-up chicken curry served in a shallow dish with a couple of lumps of rice. The beer was tepid. The large ceiling lights in the restaurant were full of dead insects indicating lack of maintenance.

The room was just about adequate, a smell of drains in the bathroom, no shaver socket meaning I had to sit on the bed to shave, shower and basin that took ages to produce warm water, no tissues, broken door latch. The towels were clean but old and worn out. The split air conditioner was ineffective and bizarrely the outside unit was housed inside the wall with a vent giving to the inside of the room, which radiated the same heat that the AC was struggling to remove. I was glad my stay coincided with cooler weather. The bed was clean and comfortable despite the worn out lumpy foam pillows and I slept well. Just about the only good point was the good reading lights each side of the bed with little LED spots supplementing the standard wall lights.

The place has the feel of a formerly good hotel built in the seventies, which is being starved of funds by the owners and is consequently in dire need of modernisation and attention to detail To be avoided unless you really have no other choice. Even the dingy Protea up at Unhlanga Rocks would be better than this.

This is the 4th time I have stayed at this hotel and still havent encounted any problems. Booked the pickup from the airport which was only 300 rand (£25) for @ 30KM not bad...Friendly check in, nice big clean room with 42inch LCD TV, close to city centre, 2km from Moses Mabhida stadium ( well worth a tour)@ 15 KM from Umhlanga Rocks, good sports bar on side of hotel, I didnt eat breakfast whilst there for 4 nights..
